The Olympics led 16-15 at the half but Toronto took a 26-19 lead at the three-quarter mark on the play of Dot Smerdon. Coach Duff rested Smerdon and Nora Young early in the fourth quarter and before he could get them back on the floor, Montreal rallied behind Macklair’s shooting. Isabel Valcamp scored 12 for Montreal and was a defensive standout. Gwen Pherrill added 3, Martha Kent 5, Millie Leather 0, J. O’Brien 9, C. Walker 0 and M. Moore 0. Dot Smerdon led Toronto with 10. Toronto held a 4-2 lead after one quarter as both teams hit a pair of foul shots and Nora Moxon scored a long bucket. Gwen Pherril of the Olympics hit a hoop and Montreal hit 4-5 from the line as they rallied to knot the score at 6-6 at the half. In the third quarter, Pherril was given three attempts at a free throw as referees ruled that the fans booing disrupted her shot. Montreal led 8-7 after three quarters and took command as Martha Kent hit three buckets. Millie Leather and Isabel Valcamp, despite playing with an injured ankle, dominated defensively. Isabel Valcamp added 2 points, Millie Leather 3, J. O’Brien 0, C Walker 0, Ann Macklair 0, M. Moore 0. Dot Smerdon scored 5 for Toronto, J. In April, CABA announces that it will investigate charges the AAU has made that Edmonton Grads coach Percy Page had refused to pay a $500 bonus after financial arrangements had been made to have the Grads play a Rochester, N.Y. team. AAU secretary Dan Ferris alleged that the Grads flouted the authority of the AAU by canceling the series after arrangements had been made through the AAU. The NY coach had demanded an extra $500 and Page refused to pay it. CABA president Doug Robertson reviewed the documents and dismissed the AAU’s claims as ludicrous.
On April 10, Percy Page announces that the Edmonton Grads will disband. Page says the players will be “definitely through with basketball” after the 25th anniversary celebration on June 6th. They will not perform for any other team. The Grads would retire because of a lack of financial support for a team “that has been too successful” and because Page, recently elected to the provincial Legislature, had no time to coach. Page said the financing of the team, complete with three farm teams, was increasingly difficult. ‘The Grads had won 516 of 540 played during the 25-year period and there was such a thing as being too successful. For most people, the old thrill as gone. And I feel that rather than try to coax people to come and see the girls play, it will be much better to drop out of the picture quietly. I should like to make this point very clear – we are not closing up because of the AAU of the United States, nor because we have run out of material. I see no reason why our long string of successes could not be maintained more or less indefinitely.” During the season, the organization sponsored three other teams: The Gradettes (women’s senior); Grad Cubs (junior) and Boy Grads, all of whom won their respective provincial titles. Douglas Robertson had given the Grads permission to bring in American teams that were not affiliated with the AAU but who held amateur cards. CABA chair Joseph Seitz ruled that the Grads would be entitled to keep the Underwood International Women’s Basketball Trophy (donated 18 years earlier) on a permanent basis as Canada did not plan to challenge the American champ again.
In the West (a “B” division final) semis, the Vancouver Westerns defeated the Edmonton Gradettes (the developmental squad for the Grads) 40-26; 31-46; 48-38 in a best of five series. …………………………………………………… In game one, the Westerns were outplayed for most of the affair but shot the ball extremely well to pull out a 40-26 win. The Westerns led 10-7, 20-13 and 24-21 at the quarters. Verna Briscoe scored 16 for Vancouver. Jessie Gillies added 7, Thelma Anderson 4, Nancy Roberts 4, M Wells 2 and Faye Burnham 1, while Connie McKenzie and K Hogue were scoreless. Frances Gordon led Edmonton with 9. H Hughes added 5, Ewasiuk 3, Strachan 3, Colville 3, Lois Hepner 2 and P Cavanagh 1, while Allard was scoreless. …………………………………………………… In game two, Western prevailed 46-31 as Thelma Anderson scored 11, Fay Burnham 8, Jessie Gillies 8, Nancy Roberts 8, Verna Briscoe 5, M Wells 4 and C McKenzie 2, while K Hogue was scoreless. The win entitled the Westerns, as “B” champs to challenge the Edmonton Grads, who won the “A” title uncontested, to a challenge series. Had the Gradettes (coached by Bill Tait) won the series, they would not have been entitled to a challenge.
