The St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics captured their third straight title despite having 6-7 Ted Byrne on the bench with a fractured foot. The Celtics were undefeated in round-robin play. The Celtics thumped the Deer Lake Elwood Lakers 87-59 as Jeff White scored 27 and Maurice Lyver 26. …………………………………………………… The Celtics then thrashed the Conception Bay South Holy Spirit Falcons 63-34 as Jeff White scored 22 and Maurice Lyver 18.

In the semis, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics throttled the Corner Brook Regina Knights 66-40 as Maurice Lyver scored 19 and Jeff White 16. The Celtics were ahead 34-26 at the half. Kevin Colbourne, Jeremy Poole and Robert Reid each scored 8 for Regina.

In the other semi, the Deer Lake Elwood Lakers defeated the St. John’s Booth Memorial Braves 61-58 as Ed Curtis scored 23. Booth Memorial, which had led 33-29 at the half, was paced by Chris Evans’ 18 points.

In the final, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics captured their third consecutive crown by defeating Deer Lake Elwood Lakers 86-58. Maurice Lyver tossed in 27 and Jeff White 23. Bob Windsor led Elwood with 18. Ed Curtis added 16. The Celtics were ahead 40-18 at the half. The 6-5 White said the victory was a total team effort. “We played hard defence and when we do that, our offence comes by itself. …They were playing me man to man defence which I like because it gives me a chance to go one-on-one, where I have an advantage with my height.” Flood noted that “Jeff and Maurice carried the team and our height and experience had a lot to do with the win as did our bench. We came out running from the start and took an early lead which certainly helped.”
