In the national tourney semi-finals, the Windsor Alumni defeated the Fredericton Caterpillars 90-76 after taking a 21-11 lead at the quarter, 45-28 at the half and 65-49 at the three-quarter mark. The Alumni shot .366, while Fredericton hit 19-51. Windsor was 16-26 from the line, while Fredericton was 18-30. Angelo Mazzuchin scored 22 to lead Windsor while fellow starters Bob Turner added 8, Mike Taranczuk 8, Mike Gloster 13 and Mario Baggio 12. Reserve Greg McCullough added 13, Rick Cloutier 5, Jon Elcombe 8 and Steve Rogin 1. Fredericton was led by forward Rick Cotter 20, forward Barry 11, centre and Texas Tech import Norm Reuther 33, guard Roach 2, guard Chisholm 1 and subs Springer 5, Small 2 and Harding 2.
In the other semi, the Vancouver Whitespots defeated the Winnipeg St. Andrews Dunlops 76-64. Winnipeg took a 21-17 lead at the quarter and were ahead 44-37 at the half but tired in the second frame. Vancouver rallied to tie the game at 58 when Gene Rizak hit a bucket and Dave Way hit two field goals to put the game out of reach for Vancouver. The White Spots shot 36-83, while Winnipeg hit 25-65. Vancouver starters forward Neil Dirom scored 2, f Billy Joe Price 16, centre Spencer 0; guard Hunter 6 and guard Dave Way 21. Subs Gene Rizak 11; Vince Knight 7; Brent Watson 11 and Al Birtles 2. For Winnipeg, forward Bill Henderson scored 9, forward Glen Torgerson 8, centre Dave Mills 18, guard Fred Ingaldson 18 and guard Grant Alfonso 11.
In the bronze medal match, the Fredericton Caterpillars nipped the Winnipeg St. Andrew’s Dunlops 80-78. The Dunlops were undone by foul trouble for posts Dave Mills and Bill Henderson. Fred Ingaldson paced the Dunlops with 15. Henderson added 15, Mills 13, Grant Alfonso 12, Gord Puttaert 10, Tim Ruppell 8 and playing coach Bob Hazell 4. The Dunlops also included Glen Torgerson, Frank Clark, Bob Paizen, Jim Bannon, Tim Ruppel, Cliff Stark, Bob Allen, Greg Gillies, Ray Knispell and manager George Fontaine.
In the final, the Windsor Alumni defeated the Vancouver Whitespots 82-77 as tournament MVP Angelo Mazzuchin scored 25 points and Mike Gloster 22. Vancouver led by Brent Watson’s 15. The game was tied at 19 after the first quarter; Windsor led 37-36 at half and 59-52 at three quarter mark. Vancouver attempted to slow the game down and nullify Windsor’s fast break. Coach Bob Hanson then switched to a 3-2 zone press. In the second half, Gloster and Mazzuchin sparked a Windsor rally to put the Alumni ahead 45-40, a lead which held to the end. Gene Rizak was ejected with 7:08 to play for punching Mazzuchin. He also drew a technical foul in the incident. Mario Baggio promptly hit three free throws to open up a 70-60 Windsor cushion. “We had to run them to be successful,” said Hanson. “We didn’t get the rebounding I was looking for until the second half. Gloster did a great job on the boards in the second half.” Vancouver had to keep fouling to catch up but Windsor hit the free throws. Vancouver coach Mel Brown told Canadian Press that “we weren’t ready to play and we weren’t in good enough physical trim to win.” An all-star squad, the White Spots were only playing their fourth game of the season together. “We were beaten by a good scrappy team,” Brown told the Vancouver Sun. “And perhaps it was a just decision. No one should win a title without having to work a whole season for it, and we didn’t start working until three weeks ago.” Each team hit 29 field goals, while Windsor shot 24-34 from the line and Vancouver shot 19-28 from the charity stripe. Fouls called: Vancouver 26, Windsor 20. Bob Turner added 11 points, Mike Taranczuk 0, Mario Baggio 11, Steve Rogin 2, Jon Elcombe 4 and Greg McCullough 7. For Vancouver, Dave Way scored 6, Brent Watson 15, Billy Joe Price 11, Gene Rizak 11, Vince Knight 9, Neil Dirom 5, Al Birtles 11 and Hunter 9.
