In the quarterfinals, the Grand Manan Breakers whipped the Boiestown Upper Miramichi Boas 73-42 as Charters scored 19. Russell 18 and Foster 12. Kristy (Kirsti?) Hunter led the Boas with 18. The Boas also included Tiffani Fowler, Mary O’Donell.
The Harvey Lakers stomped the Blackville Golden Eagles 74-15 as Rowe scored 17, King 17, Jones 10 and Mason 8.
The Hartland Huskies dumped the Sunny Corner North & South Esk Cobras 68-12 as Myers scored 26, raig 10 and Hill 10. Kendra Somers led the Cobras with 3.
In the last quarterfinal, the Stanley Blue Devils defeated the Rothesay Netherwood Riverhawks 76-67 as Calhoun scored 21, McGgehan 14, Fairly 10 and Haines 9. Natalie Owens led the Riverhawks with 10. The Riverhawks also included Britt Halpin, Britt Flood.
In the semis, the Grand Manan Breakers dusted the Harvey Lakers 72-66 as Emma Russell scored 28 and Katelyn Foster 22. Katie Row led Harvey with 28. Kristi Parker added 13.
In the other semi, the Hartland Huskies downed the Stanley Blue Devils 77-46 as Katie-Lynn Myers scored 36. Katie Craig added 22 and Erin Hill 22. Kristen McGeehan led Stanley with 24. Mandy Thomas added 15.
In the final, the Hartland Huskies defeated the Grand Manan Community Breakers 65-52. The Huskies outscored the Breakers 31-9 in the second half. Most valuable player Katie-Lynn Myers led Hartland with 24 points, 12 boards and 5 steals. “We went into the locker room (trailing 35-24) and we were a little depressed but we pulled it together,” Myers told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “We came out and worked as a team in the second half. That is definitely what won it. We just had to keep our heads in the game.” Katie Craig added 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Whitney Deware scored 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Katie Craig said “this is amazing; it is a dream come true.” Emma Russell paced the Breakers with 20 points and 11 boards. “In the second half, we couldn’t play at all,” said Russell. “I don’t know if we were out of shape, we just didn’t have the energy to play.” Olivia Charters added 14 and Duska Green 13. Hartland raced to a 12-5 lead after seven minutes but the Breakers – thanks to Russell and Charters – ran out to 35-24 lead at the half. The Huskies responded with a 12-1 run, tying it 36-36, and then taking the lead on Deware’s slashing lay-in with 12:30 left and upping it to 51-44 when Craig connected on a medium range jumper with 7:25 remaining. When Craig and Rachel Orser put together consecutive buckets moments later, Hartland had seized firm control, leading 55-44. “It’s a feeling I can’t even tell you … it’s amazing,” Myers told the Fredericton Daily Gleaner. “We worked hard the whole year and it’s nice to know it finally paid off. … We just kept working hard and that’s what did it.” Craig said the Huskies worked hard to “keep our composure and play the good defence we played all season. We knew who their good players were, and we knew we had to box out and play good D.” Russell said “we came out in the second half and we just couldn’t play at all. I don’t know if we were out of shape and didn’t have the energy to get back up court, but we just didn’t play well at all. They got off to the lead and we didn’t really give up but maybe we didn’t play our hardest. I wish we could play the second half as well as we did the first, but we couldn’t.” Lawrence said a shift a zone to a man-to-man press keyed comeback. “I told them they had to get up there and make some steals and get some quick baskets to get the score back to even. Then we could start working on some halfcourt things. I told the kids at the half ‘Eleven points is nothing in a game like this.’ If we could play some good full court defence and score some layups, we’d be all right.”
“It’s very, very frustrating,” said Russell. “We knew all season we could beat this team. But I don’t know … we’ll get them next year, I guess.”
