In the final, the St. Stephen Spartans defeated the Bristol Carleton North Stars 64-60 as point guard Amber Lenihan scored 25. Linehan also dished 8 assists, nabbed 8 boards and blocked Jennifer Savage’s trey with 11 seconds to play. “Just being at the Aitken Centre in my last year and then being able to win it is awesome,” Lenihan told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “It’s the perfect season.” The Spartans broke open the contest with a 17-0 spurt late in the first half and then held on for the win. But when Lenihan blocked the trey and DiPaolo canned a free throw at the other end to give the Spartans a four-point edge with eight seconds left, the Stars hopes of avenging a loss in 1999 finally fell short. “It was two minutes too short,” said Stars coach Paul DeMerchant. “If we had two more minutes, we could have caught them. It was too big a hole in the first half.” The Spartans defence limited the Stars to .240 from the floor. The Stars cut the deficit to two points with consecutive buckets by Ginny Fisher and Heidi Fisher with 36 seconds remaining. But Linehan wouldn’t be denied. “In your face,” she said of the block. DiPaolo and Maria Seman each scored 11 points, and Courtney Babcock 7. Ginny Fisher led Carleton North with 18, including 14 in the second half. Jennifer Savage added 14 and Heidi Fisher 12. “It’s tough,” said DeMerchant. “There are a lot of girls who are seniors and they’ll be heartbroken.” Linehan said “we didn’t have our full team when we played them before. I knew we had so much skill, so much heart and determination. We wanted it so bad. We knew if we came out and played our game, we could do it and we did.” Babcock said Lenihan was exceptional. “Amber is the most positive person on this team. She gets us going at practices. She is always loud and always wanting the best for us. She is a positive person all around.”
