Having played on the Harbour Station hardwood last year helped the Black Kats defend their title, Laura Kaye told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “I felt so comfortable this being the second time. I think the experience of our team gave us a little bit of an advantage being calm and cool.” She added that coach Rick Cotter’s calm demeanour was also an asset. “He’s the most amazing coach, I’m honoured that I got to play for him, I’m so happy that we won this for him. He’s a role model for me.” Cotter said “we did a lot of conditioning after practice and I really felt from the start of the third quarter on it really paid off for us. … From the third quarter on, every free throw built the lead and gave us a little bit of a push and when it got really tight the free throws took it away a bit.” Highlander Grace Wade, who hit two treys in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin, said “I realized there wasn’t much time left and our team wasn’t going to give up so we were just taking every opportunity we could to get a few points in.
