In the other semi, the Fredericton Black Kats dumped the Moncton Harrison Trimble Trojans 70-59 as Kathleen Singh scored 37 and Devon Lisson 14. Kari Everett and Lydia Porter each scored 20 to lead the Trojans.
In the final, the Fredericton Black Kats defeated the Moncton Purple Knights 69-63 as Devon Lisson scored 23, Kathleen Singh 16 and Ashley Briggs 15 in a repeat of the previous three finals. Lisson was named game MVP for the second consecutive years. “It was a relief that we got here,” Lisson told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “I think we deserved it. We worked really hard.” Moncton closed a 16-point deficit to four on a pair of occasions late. A 25-12 run proved the difference. “It is very frustrating because every year, there is a period of the game where we just go down and lose it,” said Purple Knight guard Gillian Donald. The game was close throughout the first 16 minutes, featuring five ties and five lead chances. But Singh connected for six points in the final 3:29 as part of a 12-2 Fredericton run to close the half with a 33-27 lead. Lisson capped the late explosion with a running lay-in at the buzzer. She added 11 more points in the opening 7:36 of the second period to put the Kats up 52-38. “In the first half, I started off slowly. In the second, I thought I had to pick up my game,” said Lisson. Consecutive buckets by Katie Harwood and Donald brought Moncton to within 10 points with 10:34 left but Lisson sandwiched a pair of lay-ins around a Singh basket and suddenly the lead was 16. A late Moncton rally closed the count to five points with 2:59 left and four with 37 seconds on the clock. But Briggs hit three free throws down the stretch to keep Moncton at bay. “I knew we were going to win,” said Briggs. “It sounds cocky but we beat them by 30 and they beat us by one or two and we played terrible. Also, they have never beat us on this floor and that was to our advantage.” Harwood led Moncton with 17. Erin Chalk added 15, Meghan Stone 13 and Donald 10. “Of course, it is disappointing but I am proud of the girls and how we played,” said Stone. “It was a close game and that’s all we could have wished for. In the second half, Devon played well and she shot well. It is hard to compete with such a great athlete.”
