In the final, the Fredericton Black Kats defeated the Moncton Purple Knights 79-68 to cap an undefeated (38-0) season. “No other team in FHS history has done what we have done,” graduating senior Joel Little told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “The team is proud and feels great in what we have accomplished.” Five players hit double figures for the Kats, who raced to a 21-9 lead, held off a pair of Moncton comebacks and then pulled away for the title with a 13-6 run midway through the second half. “We have a deep bench and that’s why we beat Moncton,” said Little, a 6-5 forward. “They can’t go as deep as us. We can go all the way down to 10 players and still play effectively.” Moncton, behind the 26-point performance of Rob Pelkey kept things interesting with a 21-10 run to close within a point at 31-30 late in the opening period. And they stayed within six points until five minutes into the second half before the Kats finally pulled away for good. “When things were going well, we were rebounding the ball,” said Fredericton’s Doug Thompson. “In the first half, they got a few offensive boards of foul shots that kept them in the game. Then we cleaned up the glass and started to run away with it.” Dylan Lisson paced the Kats with 17 points while Little and Oliver Glencross added 15. Thompson scored 13 points and guard Steve Lawrence added 10. Nine Black Kats hit the scoresheet. Pelkey noted that “I have been with this program for three years and to end it like this . . .I mean it’s nice to be here but it hurts to lose,” said Pelkey. “It all goes to the boys. I love the boys, I love the coach [Ken Curwin], I love [assistant coach Will] Kealy but it sucks to lose.” He pointed to the slow start and the fact the Knights were always in a hole. “We wanted to shake the shivers off in the warm up but obviously, it took about five minutes into the game to get us going,” he said. Denis Duquette added 17 for Moncton and Clint Bateman 9.
