In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the 9th-seeded Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers 68-45. Tigers coach Laurice Wilson said the game plan was to rain treys and go for the boards. It worked early, as the Trojans built a 13-10 lead. But by the half, the Tigers were sunk. Arlyn Adam paced the Trojans with 29. Kelly Wynn added 16. Michelle Jonasson led the Tigers with 19. Corey Crellin added 16. The Tigers (coached by Laurice Wilson) also included Brenda Johnston, Teresa Scalizzi, Evelyn Sutherland, Lucy Casano, Jennifer Medwid, Oksana Semotiuk, Orysia Semotiuk, Brenda Miller, Lucy Cassano, Christine Lazor, Bonnie Benson, Colleen Dell, Debbie Parcells and Sheryl Roy.

        The Winnipeg Westwood Warriors edged the 3rd-seeded Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 50-44. The Lancers (coached by Karl Loewen) include Holly Pow, Terri-Lee Johannesson, Sherry Parkhurst, Lara Winston, Loralie Rebec, Deidre Jones.

        The 2nd-seeded Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions stomped the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons 70-46. The Maroons (coached by Barb Hall) included Anne Schimnowski, Kim Tu, Dorothy Saunders, Anna Haldane-Wilson.

        In the last quarterfinal, the Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals dispatched the Winnipeg Kildonan East Reivers 65-49. “They couldn’t have been more happy with the way they played,” coach Wendy Goodbrandson told the Selkirk Journal. “They played so hard — it was just unbelievable.” The Royals led by nine at the half. “I said, ‘Just totally forget

the first half and concentrate oil winning the second. Pretend it’s 0-0 right now,” said Goodbrandson. The Reivers closed to within four but Sophia Jelinek had the answers in the post. Jelinek paced the Royals with 20. The Reivers (coached by Brenda Richardson) included Candy Greengrass, Jody Zurba, Igeoma Ogoms.

        In the semis, the top-seeded Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Selkirk Lord Selkirk Regional Royals 78-51 as Arlyn Adam scored 37 and nabbed 15 boards. Kelly Wynn scored 16 and Susan Sommerfield 14. The Trojans shot 42% from the floor, while the Royals hit 27%. The Royals outrebounded the Trojans 45-33. The Trojans led 31-28 at the half. Shauna Streich and Sophia Jelinek each scored 14 to lead the Royals. Fiona Ellison added 10, along with 12 boards. Jelinek added 9 boards. “They changed things in the third quarter and we just couldn’t adjust,” coach Wendy Goodbrandson told the Selkirk Journal. The Royals were also plagued by missed bunny layups.  “Although we really didn’t want to go down being kicked,” Goodbrandson qualified. “At least we were only kicked for 20 minutes of basketball instead of 40.”

        In the other semi, the Glenlawn Lions dumped the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors 69-55 as Diane Zunic scored 27. Michelle Chambers added 14, while nabbing 14 boards. “My coach says I am the leader and I think I am, too,” Zunic told the Winnipeg Free Press. “Sometimes, they have to tell me to settle down, because I yell a lot. But I think it helps them out, and it helps me, too.” Susan Oland led the Warriors with 23 points and 12 boards. Jennifer Hamilton also nabbed 12 boards.

In the final, the top-seeded Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans stomped the Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions 63-45 to capture their second consecutive crown and their sixth under coach Dave McNabb. Tournament MVP Arlyn Adams dragged herself out of sick bed to score 25 and nab 22 boards. Kelly Wynn added 18 and Susan Sommerfield 6 before tearing a knee ligament. The Trojans led 40-21 at the half. “In the first half we had the ball 40 times and scored 40 points,” said Trojans coach Dave McNab, “and that’s great in any game, anywhere.” Kelly Wynn added 18. Glenlawn Coach Bryan Kornberger said “Vincent Massey just played super and forced us to play poorly. They anticipated so well it was hard to make passes to set up quality shots. But they didn’t think they were out of it at the half and then went out and played well. Frankly. I felt we were just a couple baskets away from getting back in it.” Diane Zunic led the Lions with 23.
