In the opening round: …………………………………………………… The top-seeded Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons defeated the Brandon Crocus Plains Plainswomen 56-49. The Plainsmen led 15-14, 25-22 and 35-32 at the quarters. “But we just kind of died,” Plainsmen coach Dwayne Carter-Squire told the Brandon Sun. “(Heidi) Bauer got 12 points in the fourth quarter and that did us in. Angela Peterson was outstanding for us and she kind of played behind Bauer all game, but she just got tired in the last few minutes.” Heidi Bauer led the Maroons with 21. Cindy Penner added 16 and Linda Goodhand 10. Angela Peterson led the Plainswomen with 24. Shannon Palmer added 12 and Karen Flay 7. Maroons coach Barb Hall told the Winnipeg Free Press that she was unimpressed with her team’s performance. “I don’t want to be in a game that close again. We didn’t play well in the first half but the kids came on in the second.” …………………………………………………… The Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Winnipeg John Taylor Pipers 40-38 despite shooting just 16-77 from the floor. “I wasn’t happy with the way we played,” Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “We knew they’d play a zone and we practiced it all week, but we just couldn’t do anything. We got the shots and we were in the range, but we just couldn’t make them. We usually shoot about 40 per cent and average 55 points a game, and what did we do today? And, Krista Einarson usually gets about 17 a game, and how many did she get? Thank goodness we had Janet Smith coming through for us with the big points.” Janet Smith led the Vikings with 12. Krista Einarson added 6 and Patti Whyte 6. Smith scored the winner with a minute to play. After Naomi Collins missed a shot for the Pipers, the Vikings stalled out the clock. Collins led the Pipers with 15. Deb Swidinsky added 13. The Vikings also included Angela Mol, Gayle Fabris. The Vikings led 22-16 at the half. “The press bothered us at the start,” said Pipers coach Paul Granovski. “But once we started looking, we saw people were open and we started to come through. They are a well-coached team, but both teams made a lot of mistakes tonight. I don’t think anyone was making their shots.” …………………………………………………… The Winnipeg Fort Richmond Centurions dusted the Winnipeg Gordon Bell Panthers 62-44 as Shannon Jonassen scored 14 and Wendy McKurdy 13. Laurie Farley added 12. “They played a zone defence on us which slowed the game down,” Kodiaks coach Dick Blais told the Winnipeg Free Press. “In the second half, we tried to take only 75%-shots. If they weren’t there, we would just work it around until they were.” Karen Bagovics led the Normacs with 11.

In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons defeated the Winnipeg Windsor Park Royals 61-47 as Heidi Bauer scored 22 and Cindy Penner 14. Beatrice Dyce led the Royals with 14. Janice Bailey added 11. Maroons coach Barbara Hall told the Winnipeg Free Press that her troops played “alright. … Everyone did her job well.” Hall added that “Heidi was on Dyce for most of the game. In fact, six of her points came while Heidi was on the bench in the third quarter.”

The other semi was also an upset as the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks 71-68 by getting star Diana Quartel in foul trouble. She picked up her fourth early in the third quarter and sat out most of the second half. But she still scored 27 for Winnipeg River East. Carol Beyak added 13 and Naomi Penner 10. Brandon was paced by Krista Einarson’s 23 points. Angela Foster added 16. “I aged three years tonight,” Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Winnipeg Free Press. “But I’ll tell you one thing. When you win, it is great. It is fun, especially when you win.” Kodiaks coach Dick Blais said “no doubt about it. The four fouls to Diana really hurt us. We lost both her shooting and the boards in the third quarter.

In the final, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons thumped the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 53-41. Tournament MVP Heidi Bauer scored 12 of her 26 points in the first half but Daniel McIntyre still trailed 28-17. “We weren’t moving and that allowed them to get in front of us. We had no continuity and as a result, weren’t getting inside,” Daniel McIntyre coach Barb Hall told the Winnipeg Free Press. “I told them to begin working the ball around with quicker, shorter passes. I told them if they wanted it, they would win it. And they did it.” Cindy Penner added 16 for Daniel McIntyre. Both Bauer and Penner spent most of the third quarter on the bench in foul trouble, but subs Sandy James and Jane Wiczling “did a great job” in relief, said Hall. “Both girls (James and Wiczling) would start on any other team. They stayed with the pressure and we got the lead with them in.” Angela Foster paced Brandon with 20. Krista Einarson added 9. The Vikings led 28-17 at the half but relinquished a 20-6 run to start the second half. “We went cold, that’s all we did,” Vikings’ coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “They outscored us badly. We just stood around watching on defence.” Although Bauer picked up her fourth foul in the third quarters, other stepped up. “People just don’t realize how much depth we have,” Hall said. “We’ve got players on the bench who could have really been the difference for other teams in this tournament. When we lost Bauer, we had people who could fill the void.”
