In the quarterfinals, the St. Norbert Celtics defeated the Winnipeg Springfield Sabres 40-24 as Mary Ann Osterveen scored 11, Collette Oliver 11, Dinah Osterveen 10. Betty-Anne Taylor led the Sabres with 12.
The Winnipeg John Taylor Piperettes clocked the Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers 51-25 as Karen Downie scored 18 and Marilyn Bueckert 18. The Clippers included Chris Reiter, Alison Wood.
The Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings smacked the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks 46-23. Betty Purdie scored seven unanswered points as the Vikings took command in the first quarter. They led 24-11 at the half with Purdie and Janice Meyers dominating the boards. “Our big girls came through tonight,” coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “They played really good, especially off the boards.” Sharon Lukiw paced the Vikings with 18. Betty Purdie added 9. “It’s really pleasing to see the girls playing defence like that. And the way Sharon is playing is something else,” Farnell added. The Kodiaks included Barb Nebozanko.
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans defeated the Winnipeg Grant Park Pirates 55-26 as Andrea Pollock scored 21.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans edged the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 28-26 in double overtime as Andrea Pollock hit a field with 10 seconds to play, the only two points scored in the extra periods. The Trojans led 12-5 after one quarter. The Vikings led 16-15 at the half. The score was knotted at 22 after three quarters and at 26 after regulation. Eleanor Thompson had hit a field goal to give the Vikings a 26-22 lead with 5:27 to play. But Teri Pura hit a pair of free throws, Shirley Brown a free throw and Virginia Brown a free throw to knot the score with 47 seconds to play. The Vikings had a chance to knot the score on the final play but Dauna Cutforth’s jumper went awry. “I told the girls to set the ball up and give Dauna the shot,” coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “Everything went perfectly except the shot didn’t go in.” Andrea Pollock led the Trojans with 13. Dauna Cutforth led the Vikings with 9 and Sharon Lukiw 7, while forward Janice Meyers did a good job containing Pollock.
In the other semi, the St. Norbert Celtics knocked off the defending champion Winnipeg John Taylor Piperettes 52-23 as Mary Ann Oosterveen, Dinah Oosterveen and Colette Olivier each scored 13 points.
In the bronze medal match, the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings clubbed the Winnipeg John Taylor Piperettes 41-30 as Dauna Cutforth scored 14 and Sharon Lukiw 13. Marlene Bueckert led the Piperettes with 9. The Piperettes (coach Paul Granovsky, manager Sheila Schmitke) also included Marnie Scott, Debbie Novakowski, Cathy Bremner, Nadine Gilfallan, Diane Abrahamson, Debbie Rempel and Karen Downie.
In the final, the Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans thrashed the St. Norbert Celtics 43-29. St. Norbert appeared in control in the first half, leading 20-13 at the break. But star Mary Ann Oosterveen fouled out early in the second half and the Trojans took control, breezing to a 43-29 victory. Andrea Pollock led Massey with 23. Teri Pura and Virginia Brown each added 7. Dinah Oosterveen paced St. Norbert with 12. Vincent Massey finished (31-4) on season.
