In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Silver Heights Huskies defeated the Portage Collegiate Pats 39-13 as Lesley Hamerton scored 16 and Val Sturtridge 8, while Jayne Alix did a masterful job dictating the tempo. The Pats (coached by Ralph Rowley, assisted by Roberta Shinnon) included Nancy Ellwood, Noreen Kitson, Pat Crozier, Sigrid Milbradt, Eleanor Moran, Debbie Crozier, Nancy Greenley, Sue Gravelle, Edith Heintz, Elizabeth Oshust, Judy Adams, Dianne Banks and Garda Sinclair.
The Brandon Harrison Hawks defeated the Miami Midland Marlins 40-34. The Marlins led 19-16 at the half and 30-20 after three quarters but fell apart when point guard Judy Nordquist fouled out. Valerie Rollins paced the Hawks with 17. Myrna Follett led the Marlins with 16. The Marlins (coached by Glennis Scott) also included Florence Spenst, Barbara Spencer, Pam Webber, Sally Dorval, Betty Andrews, Janet Fox, Hilda Nickel, Barbara Lowry and Karen Roberts.
The Winnipeg Dakota Lancers stomped the ‘B’ division champ Winnipeg Tec Voc Hornets 61-25 as Diane Theberge, Barbara McAmmond and Linda James repeatedly pilfered the ball for runout layups. Roberta Hutchison paced the Lancers with 16. Diane Theberge added 12. Colleen MacMillan and Karin Barnett each scored 6 to pace the Hornets. The Hornets (coached by Audrey Jones) also included Linda Wood, Cheryl Taylor, Kathie McKinnon, Irene Cieiowski, Barb Hendry, Terry Noga, Pat Siwek, Colleen MacMillan, Karen Taker, Alice Anderson, Janet Van Der Nagel and Leslie Hemphill.
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Springfield Sabres crushed the Hamiota Huskies 47-24 as Theresa Galka scored 17 and Donna Taylor 12. Pat Thompson paced the Huskies with 12. Karen Anderson added 6. The Sabres led 32-13 at the half. The Huskies (coached by Lorna Robertson) also included Glenda Kirk, Dawn McConnell, Garda Williams, Barb McLaren, Barb Kirk, Sharon Murray, Maxine Fraser, Wanda Anderson, Karen Cooke, Lareen Morton and Francies Finnie.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Silver Heights Huskies defeated the Brandon Harrison Hawks 45-20 as their guards repeatedly stripped the ball from Harrison’s backcourt. Val Sturtridge scored 13, Paula Peters 10 and Leslie Hamerton 9. Val Rollins paced the Hawks with 9. Brenda Earl added 6.
In the other semi, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers handled the Winnipeg Springfield Sabres 44-25 as Roberta Hutchinson scored 11, Diane Theberge 10 and Donna Mallette 8. Doreen Schreyer led the Sabres with 7.
In the bronze medal match, the Winnipeg Springfield Sabres dispatched the Brandon Harrison Hawks 54-30. Valerie Rollins led the Hawks with 19. Brenda Earl added 5. The Hawks (coached by Wayne Gray) also included Lecia Chalaturnyk, Bonnie Balkwill, Gloria Misanchuk, Roberta Fletcher, Valerie Rollins.
In the final, the Winnipeg Silver Heights Huskies won their second consecutive crown under the leadership of Leslie Hamerton and Val and Vicki Sturtridge, as they pasted the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 42-17 and avenged their Cloverleaf conference championship title game loss. The defensive rebounding of Hamerton and the two Sturtridge’s proved the difference, coach John Coutts told the Winnipeg Free Press. “Dakota is a better team than they showed tonight. That game this afternoon must have taken too much out of them.” Hamerton finished with 20 points, while flashy point guard Jayne Alix, who completely controlled the tempo of the contest, added 6. The Huskies led 13-4, 22-7 and 34-14 at the quarters. Lancer starters Diane Theberge, Barbara McAmmond, Linda James and Roberta Hutchinson all fouled out.
