In opener against Argentina, Canada fell 72-65 despite 14 points from Andrew Mavis. Todd MacCulloch added 12 points and 3 blocks. Eric Hinrichsen scored 12 and grabs 12 boards. Jason Brade scores 7, Mark Passley 7. Steve Maga 5 and 4 steals.

In the semis, the United States thrashed Canada 114-54 as Andrew Parker scored 19. Dave Small paced Canada with nine.

In the bronze medal match, Argentina defeated Canada 75-70. Argentina took a 16-point lead after nailing a series of threes. But Canada rallied back to within 71-70 with a minute to play. Canada missed a foul shot that would have tied it. Argentina gets the ball and Canada extends its defence. Guard Steve Maga forces a turnover but the ball bounces off his hands out of bounds. Argentina hangs on for the win. “We didn’t execute in the end,” says coach Ken Olynyk. “We were within 40 seconds of qualifying. We know we’re really close, so damn close to being able to compete for a medal. It is a great honour to be involved to represent your country.” With the loss, Canada fails to qualify for Under-22 worlds in Australia in 1997. Eric Hinrichsen led Canada with 22. Jason Brade added 15 and six boards. Novell Thomas added 9, Todd MacCulloch 9 and Mark Passley 9. Steve Maga had four steals and four points. “The whole team was disappointed that we didn’t capture the bronze medal,” said Olynyk. “But I was pleased with our performance. We could see a couple of these players playing with our national team within a couple of years.”
