In the other semi, the 6th-seeded MacGregor Mustangs dumped the 7th-seeded Killarney Raiders 83-60. Jeff Burke was chosen player of the game for the Mustangs, while Connor Macauley earned the laurel for the Raiders. “They were bigger than we are and they were pretty fast, but we played excellent,” Mustangs coach Myron Friesen told the Lac la Prairie Central Plains Leader. “We’ve had some really talented players over the years, but this is the best team we’ve had — they’re the hardest workers.”
In the bronze medal match, the 4th-seeded Ste. Anne Lynx stomped the 7th-seeded Killarney Raiders 77-53. The Raiders (coached by Terry Beazley) included Scott Lawson, Brennan Foidart, Connor Macaulay, Dillon Milliken, Cody Milliken, Dillon Nichol, Daniel Kroeker, Darris Hardern, Brent Spurrill, Brady Mitchell, Zachary Beazley and Terryl Stagg.
In the final, the top-seeded Roblin Goose Lake Raiders crushed the 6th-seeded MacGregor Mustangs 81-45 to capture their third consecutive provincial title. Caleb Smith and Bobby Neufeld each scored 17 to pace the Raiders. Smith was chosen player of the game for the Raiders. “We didn’t go into the tournament with big expectations,” Mustangs coach Myron Friesen told the Lac la Prairie Central Plains Leader. “We really hoped we could win the first game and then see where we could go from there. … But we ended up doing really well. … That was where our Cinderella story kind of ended. Our boys played hard all weekend, but we just got beaten by a better team. It was daunting (playing Roblin), not because they were the home team, but because they are an exceptional team.” Friesen said losing top scorer Linden Guenther to foul trouble and point guard Daniel Spelliscy to an injury in the first half “hurt. … I’ve never seen Daniel (Vermeulen) play better than he did on the weekend. And (Linden Guenther) carried us on his back all season long, and this weekend was no exception. He’s only in Grade 11 — so you can call me next year when we win provincials.” Linden Guenther led the Mustangs with 17. Jeff Burke added 11.
