In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors defeated the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 84-68. The Vikings led by 16 early but the Warriors rallied to knot the score at 49. The momentum shifted when Viking post Joe Burgess fouled out. Frank Lindal paced the Warriors with 24. Gary Vickery added 18, Jack Mitchell 12, Bob Hill 8, Ryan Smith 7, Doug Milne 6, Jerry Friesen 4, Brian Berkowski 4, while Dave Allen, Wayne Christensen and Garth Penner were scoreless. Rod Lindenberg scored 23 to lead the Vikings (coached by Terry Little and Barry Diller, and managed by Randy Langstaff) with 23. Dwight Burgess added 13, Joe Burgess 12, Ted Jones 9, Ken Roblesky 7, Larry Kardash 5, Doug Collister 3 and Mike Kearns 2, while Don Moroz, Gene Parks and Scott Clark were scoreless.
The Winnipeg Sisler Spartans clipped the Winnipeg River East Kodiaks 48-38 as Joe Dudar scored 16. Greg Mula added 9, Joe Globa 9, M Etkin 6, D Leronawich 6, while G Burkett, A Didiuk, D Batt, B Bernhart, P Satnikowski, T Alexander and R Holte were scoreless. Jim Bauer led the Kodiaks with 17. Lyle Wilson added 9, D Potschka 8, J Wilkinson 2 and P Bruel 2, while B Wiebe, R Peney, J Kerr, S Hirose and T Smorang were scoreless.
The Winnipeg Dakota Lancers dumped the Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Hawks 57-37 after leading 15-11, 21-19 and 38-31 at the quarters. Bob Fosker paced the Lancers with 15. F Macauley added 12, Ken Chapman 12, Bob Ogilvie added 5, J McDermid 4, Keith Krotch 1 and Forrest Cavanaugh 1, while Rick Watts, Bob Pranys, Brian Flockton and Ed Alexiuk were scoreless. “That was probably one of the best three games we’ve played all season,” Lancers coach Dale Bradshaw told the Winnipeg Free Press. “That’s not many out of 30. Unfortunately, our good games have been too few and far between.” Carl Pauls paced the Hawks with 16. Eric Fast added 6, Larry Thiessen 5, Vic Martens 2, Rollie Buller 1 and John Froese 1, while Neil Buller, Vic Kliewer, Ron Koslowsky and Henry Thiessen were scoreless. The Hawks (coached by Bruce Enns, manager Brian Friesen, manager Ben Sawatsky) also included Ray Van Styvendale and John Derksen.
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Windsor Park Royals nipped the Winnipeg Grant Park Pirates 61-60. The Pirates led 16-15 after one quarter and 32-29 at the half. The Royals led 49-42 after three quarters. Don Lamont paced the Royals with 21. Darryl Rumsey added 18, Rick Supeene 9, Joe Dodd 5, Jerry Smith 4 and Glen Sanders 4, while Mike Castling, Brian Briscoe, Bob Hayes and John Fisher were scoreless. Ron Waugh led the Pirates with 27. In the final, the Winnipeg Westwood Warriors nipped the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 53-51. “The big kid won it for us,” an elated Westwood coach Dave Guss told the Winnipeg Free Press. “I thought (Bob) Hill played a tremendous game.” Hill was an enormous presence in the paint. Gary Vickery paced the Warriors with 18, including seven down the stretch. Ryan Smith added 15, Bob Hill 8, Frank Lindal 8, Jack Mitchell 4 and Garth Penner 2, while Dave Allen, Brian Berkowski, Wayne Christensen, Jerry Friesen, Ryan Smith and Doug Milne were scoreless. Lancer Bob Ogilvie had a shot to tie at the buzzer but the ball circled the rim and spun out. “They’ve beaten us three times this season, and you can’t argue with that,” Dakota coach Dale Bradshaw told the Winnipeg Free Press. “But had that shot of Ogilvie’s dropped, anything might have happened.” The lead changed hands 18 times in the first and twice in the second. The Lancers led 16-15 after one quarter and 32-31 at the half. The Warriors led 42-38 after three quarters and by as many as 8 in the final quarter. Ken Chapman paced the Lancers with 19. Bob Fosker added 11, Bob Ogilvie 8, Forrest Cavanaugh 5, Keith Krotch 4, Fred Macauley 2 and Dale McDermid 2, while Rick Watts, Bob Pranys, Brian Flockton and Ed Alexiuk were scoreless.
