In the quarterfinals, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons defeated the Winnipeg West Kildonan Wolverines 45-44 despite trailing 20-16 at the half. Ken Burfoot scored 13, including 10 in the third quarter. Ron Capelle added 10. George Burnett led the Wolverines with 16. Alan Fulsher added 12. The Wolverines (coached by Jim Orchard, manager Sheldon Turbovsky) included Geoff Bragg, Dave Mironchnik, Percy Anderson, Willie Hyde, Neil Sheppard, Richard Gooch and Bryon Fyfe.
The Winnipeg St. John’s Tech Tigers dumped the Winnipeg Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute Hawks 43-33 as Ross Wedlake scored 14. The Tigers led 13-4, 22-12 and 30-23 at the quarters. Edwin Wall led the Hawks with 12. The Hawks also included Ed Redekop, Albert Fenske.
The Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions edged the Winnipeg Garden City Gophers 46-41 despite trailing 25-24 at the half. But Ron Pelletier and George Johnson took command of the boards in the second half and the Lions were able to successfully stall the last three minutes. Pelletier led the Lions with 18. Johnson added 8. Dwight Waly paced the Gophers with 13. Ron Solylo added 10.
In the last quarterfinal, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers stomped the “B” division champ Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 62-31 as Gary Puttaert scored 15, Ted Stoesz 14 and Jan Kreutzer 10. Lasby Lowes led the Vikings with 18. The Vikings (coached by Stew Farnell) included Ted Gibson, Ken Butler, Garry Paulson, Al Ross, Mo MacMillan, Bob Haines, Allan Delavau and Larry Delavau.
In the semis, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons defeated the Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions 66-62 as Alex Papadakis scored 20, Roy Stevenson 18, Bob Allen 12 and Orton Harrison 10. Glenlawn was paced by George Johnson’s 17 points. Larry Jones added 12.
In the other semi, the Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers defeated the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers 46-45 as Hymie Fox hit a free throw with five seconds to go. Fox paced the Tigers with 21. Ross Wedlake added 16. Jan Kreutzer paced the Lancers with 19. Gary Puttaert added 12.
In the final, the Winnipeg Daniel McIntyre Maroons avenged a loss in the city finals by defeating Winnipeg St. John’s Tigers 53-35. St. John’s dominated the first half, leading 23-19 at the half, and appeared to be en route to a victory, when Daniel McIntyre went on a 17-9 run in the third quarter to grab a 36-32 lead. The Maroons then added a 17-0 run. Rollie Allen paced the Maroons with 21. Alex Papadakis added 10, as did Ron Capello. The Maroons starting iron five played the entire match. Defenders Roy Stevenson and Orton Harrison held Tigers star Ross Wedlake to just 14.
