At the end of the first quarter, Mission led 32-13, and this one was all but over. “The entire season, we haven’t played teams that play defence that way,” Brar said. “Mentally, it puts you in a different head space. It makes it harder to do what you normally do.” After the first, the Vikings managed to settle down, and won the next three quarters 40-39. “Partway through the second quarter, we started thinking that we could figure this out,” Brar said. “For the rest of the game, being down by 25 or whatever, we ended up losing by 18.” The Roadrunners were solid in every aspect of the game — they ran an effective press, they played solid around their own basket and, most notably, they passed the ball around beautifully. “We really work on being disciplined in our systems,” said Mission head coach Anthony Luyken. “I’ve got some kids who understand the game and, at this point, they’re making good decisions.”

In the final, the Mission Roadrunners defeated the Vancouver York House Tigers 62-53. After building the girls basketball program at Mission secondary for the past 10 years, Roadrunners coach Anthony Luyken was as emotional as his players. “The last tournament was the best tournament of the season,” said Roadrunners’ Elise Lepine. “It’s really exciting at the top,” said Luyken. “It’s what we strived for and knew one day we would get to this level. We’re going to enjoy the moment while we’re here.” The team started the season with three goals in mind: to be undefeated in the season, to win the Fraser Valleys, and to win the provincials. “It was pretty cool to start off then see everything unfold,” said Luyken. “Everyone knew we were on track, and it was cool to see them meet all the goals.” Tournament MVP Aieisha Luyken said “last year we got beat out in the quarters, and this was one step further. Vernon is also a big team, and we haven’t played many teams like that this season,” Lepine added. Mission had defeated York House three times during the season. “This was by far the closest game,” said Lepine. It was the most intense defensive game we played,” agreed the coach. The game was close in the first three quarters, and it wasn’t until the last half of the fourth Mission pulled away. The Roadrunners built up nearly a 10-point lead and managed to maintain it. “We prevailed in the fourth,” said Luyken. “This was a great year for the team.” Luyken said the last time Mission flew a provincial basketball banner for a girls’ team was in 1921.
