In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Vancouver York House Tigers thrashed the Abbotsford Christian Knights 79-54. The Tigers led 43-31 at the half and 61-47 after three quarters. The Tigers were led by Susana Henri with 22 points and Casey Rollins with 16, including four three-pointers. The Knights, a team who has dedicated the season to lost friends and a coach, following a series of traumatic incidents in the past couple of years, were close for much of the first half, led by Rebecca Kyba with 14 and 16 by Cindy Bestebroer.
The 3rd-seeded Kamloops Red Angels defeated the Victoria Lambrick Park Lions 55-35. Kam High started slowly but found their shooting touch in the second half. The Red Angels scored just 24 points in the first half but still led 24-16 at the break. Triplets Jessica, Megan and Leslie Moon scored 14, 14 and 9 points respectively, for Kam High. Lindsay Ross led Lambrick Park with 12. The Lions also included Natalia Grzyana, Ashley Lum, Taryn Terloaver, Lane Douglas-Hunt, Alison Quinlan.
The Kamloops Westsyde Whundas nipped the 4th-seeded Surrey Holy Cross Crusaders 49-47. The Whundas weathered a desperate last-minute rally by Holy Cross Crusaders to emerge with the win. The teams were tied at 23 at the half. Erica Janyk led Westsyde with 17 and hit the winning hoop when she opportunistically rebounded and scored off a missed foul shot by teammate Erica Howes. Holy Cross top scorer Marlene Pontes had 13, before fouling out in the midst of her team’s last-minute rally from six points down. Holy Cross (coached by Gianni Bittante and John Prescott) also included Monni Dumas, Marlene Pontes, Stacy Cassidy. Bittante told the Surrey Leader it was a “bitter” loss. “We had every opportunity to win but we missed too many layups. We played good defence but the ball wouldn’t go in the hole.”
In the last quarterfinal, the Vancouver Little Flower Academy Angels defeated the Kimberley Selkirk Storm 78-61. Little Flower Academy Angels led 27-11 after a quarter and went on to an easy 78-61 win over Selkirk. Lauren LaBrosse scored 21 to pace the Angels. Yvonne Mensah added 16 and Caroline Cannon 15. Selkirk was paced by Kali Holm with 22 and Laura Campbell added 19.
In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver Little Flower Academy Angels dumped the 3rd-seeded Kamloops Red Angels 83-56. Little Flower put their great team speed to use at both ends of the court and blitzed the Red Angels 27-9 in the first quarter. Little Flower led 42-23 at the half and 66-36 after three quarters. Lauren LaBrosse led Little Flower with 20. Carolina Cannon added 19 and Yvonne Mensah 17. Kam High got 16 from Caitlyn Knowles and 15 by Megan Moon.
In other semi, the top-seeded Vancouver York House Tigers stomped the 6th-seeded Kamloops Westsyde Whundas 64-48 as Erin Allan scored 26, despite being blanked in the first quarter. Danielle Fashler added 13 and Susan Henri 10. “I feel like I have to bring the team up. If they’re seeing that I’m pumped, then they are going to be pumped, too,” Allan told Kamloops This Week. “None of the other teams have anything to lose since we come in here first. It’s on us to win. We’ve got to try even harder thinking everyone is out to get us.” Whundas forward Laura White said “we knew what we had to do, playing a team like that. They are No. 1. We were intense and we had a lot of heart but I think our hearts overruled our heads.” The Tigers broke to a 6-1 lead but Emma Lesnik hit a pair of treys as the Whundas rallied within 18-17 after one quarter. But Allan drove past Erica Howes for a bucket and then ripped down a defensive board and raced coast-to-coast for a layup as the Tigers took command. “It’s hard to stop Erin,” said Tigers coach David Prissinotti. “She had to be my point guard for two years and now she’s playing forward. She faces up and can take it with her quick first step.” The Tigers led 36-25 at the half and 52-38 after three quarters. Emma Lesnik led the Whundas with 14, including three from beyond the arc. Laura White added 10.
In the bronze medal match, the Kamloops Red Angels defeated the Kamloops Westsyde Whundas 66-50 as Megan Moon scored 18, Caitlyn Knowles 16 and Angie Roddan 6. Michelle Lowey led the Whundas with 15. Erica Janyk added 12. “It’s my last year and I really wanted to get something to remember this by,” Megan Moon told Kamloops This Week. “Last night, we were so nervous and so uptight that we didn’t come out the way we normally do. We’ve played Westsyde so many times that we knew what to do.” The Red Angels led 36-28 at the half and after the Whundas rallied, Moon pilfered 2 balls and nailed 5 free throws to ice the win. The Whundas (coached by Bob Bridges) also included Erica Howes, Laura White, Emma Lesnik, Alicia Kosolofski.
In the final, the York House Tigers defeated the Little Flower Academy Angels 75-60. York House streaked to an 18-7 lead after one-quarter and was never threatened, leading 18-7, 33-22 and 48-33 at the quarters. Tournament MVP Erin Allan led York House with 21. Lisa Tindle added 16 and defensive player of the tournament Susana Henri 13. It marked Little Flower’s fourth straight loss in the finals and 7th in eight finals appearances. “There never was any shine on silver,” Angels coach Debbie Smallwood told Kamloops This Week. Angels star post Lauren LaBrosse was forced off the court with her team trailing 25-12 in the second quarter, she’d been hit in the face with a hard pass, which prompted her nose to bleed. In her absence, the Tigers were able to rest their starters. “We had a bench,” Allan said. “They didn’t.” Allen was able to use her stocky frame to wear down the Angels. “It’s the only way you can play,” said Allan. “You have to use your size.” Grade 9 point guard Lisa Tindle said “this is just amazing. It’s all happening so fast. It’s amazing.” Caroline Cannon led Little Flower with 24, including four treys Lauren LaBrosse added 16, including 6-6 from the line. York House closed the season with a 33-7 record.
