In the semis, the 5th-seeded Victoria Oak Bay Breakers stunned the top-seeded Surrey Holy Cross Crusaders 67-66 after rallying from a 12-point second-half deficit. The Breakers led 20-12 after one quarter. The Crusaders led 24-23 at the half and 47-37 after three quarters. Michelle Bos gave the Crusaders a 53-41 lead with a trey with 1:55 remaining in the third quarter. But the Breakers closed it out with a 26-13 run as point guard Morgan Roskelley began attacking the basket. “Something had to happen, something had to change,” Roskelley told the Vancouver Province. “So I put my head down and decided to do something about it. To be honest, my role isn’t a scoring role. I set people up and I make the offence move. But I don’t know. It just kind of clicked so I went with it.” With 3:27 left, Lauren Yearwood tied the score by completing a three-point play from the stripe to tie the score 63-63. Her turnaround layup with 2:08 left gave the Breakers the lead for good at 65-63. After a Roskelley steal and feed, Yearwood knocked down a short jumper for a 67-63 lead with 1:15 left. Holy Cross missed two of its final three free throws to come up short. “I am very proud of our girls, but in a way, it is a very rare feeling right now,” said Oak Bay coach Rob Kinnear. “It almost doesn’t feel good to beat a team because you respect them so much. From top to bottom, they are a high-class, high effort, well coached team. It was out of character for her (Roskelley to attack). She is a pass-first point guard, and so to see her step up like that is a testament to her character, to her competitiveness.” Holy Cross coach Steve Beauchamp said “we got up a little, eight or 10, and we were kind of on the verge. Then they had two or three possessions in a row where we got the stop, but didn’t get the rebound and they managed to score on them. If you get those rebounds and those loose balls, that can be the difference.” Lauren Yearwood paced the Breakers with 26 on 11-22 from the floor, 4-5 from the line, 13 boards and 3 steals. Mouat Hawks 89-58 after leading 25-22, 46-34 and 69-44 at the quarters. “We haven’t had 10 in practice this year, we’ve had a lot of injuries, so we’ve played a lot of four-on-four,” said Brookswood coach Neil Brown told the Vancouver Province, referring to the fact that Mouat took shooting guard Jessie Brown out of the game, not allowing her to hit a trey or get any semblance of offensive flow. “So that is what we have been doing all year. It worked out.” Aislinn Konig “is a pretty good player, they can take Jessie out, and at first it bothered her, but we just say she is occupying people. They are playing four-on-four, there’s no help anymore. Let’s just play. Ace was on her own here, man. She drove, she passed, she is really, really, really good player.” Aislinn Konig paced the Bobcats with 29 on 12-16 from the floor, 4-8 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 2 boards, 9 assists and 4 steals. Mouat Hawks 84-71 after leading 26-13, 35-33 and 57-55 at the quarters. “We got up and got a little bit complacent, and I thought Mouat really increased their intensity and physicality in the second quarter,” coach Steve Beauchamp told the Surrey North Delta Leader. “They really came at us. We’re not a physical team, we don’t play that way. So we had a talk at half time, we needed to pick up our intensity and the girls did just that.” Rachel Beauchamp paced the Crusaders with 25 on 9-13 from the floor, 7-14 from the line, 10 boards and 2 steals. The Bobcats led 29-28 at the half and 49-43 after three quarters. Although senior shooting guard Jessie Brown was having a tough shooting night and tournament MVP and grade 10 point guard Aislin Konig was in foul trouble, the Bobcats gutted out the win. “It’s because we worked together as a team to win the banner,” Brown told the Vancouver Province. “It wasn’t about anyone’s points. Right now, it just feels so good. All the dedication was worth it.” Post Tayla Jackson battled Grade 11 Oak Bay counterpart Lauren Yearwood to a draw in the blocks. Bobcats coach Neil Brown won his second provincial crown, having led Aldergrove to a Double-A boy’s title 20 years earlier. “The whole team, is here tonight. That is cool. This is what it’s all about.” Oak Bay coach Rob Kinnear said “I don’t think emotion or fatigue came into it. Today, we played a good team and they made a few plays down the stretch and we didn’t.” Kinnear later told the Victoria News that his troops “played a great final, coming up just a bit short in the end. All the girls made awesome contributions and as a group they truly battled right until the end.” Brookswood guard Jessie Brown told the Langley Times the Bobcats were motivated by a loss in the 2013 final. “We just kept trying to push and push. We know what it feels like to lose a championship.” Tayla Jackson added that “I have no words to describe it, just pure happiness.
