In the quarterfinals, the Salmon Arm Jewels edged the Clearbrook Mennonite Educational Institute Eagles 31-25 as Janice Bianco scored 9. The Eagles included Sharon Warkentin.
The Victoria High Totems defeated clubbed the Richmond Colts 59-30 as Sandy Lewis scored 16. The Totems led 16-3, 32-12 and 57-18 at the quarters. Colts coach Bob Blount told the Richmond Observor that “it was disastrous. Our kids had never played against a team with the skills of Vic High before. Consequently, we just watched them in awe for the first part of the game. … They played excellent man-to-man defence. They gave you the ball and then challenged the team to score in the 30-second time limit.” The Colts (coached by Bob Blount) included Rhonda Good, Liz Campbell, Cathy Morgan.
The Victoria Mount Douglas Rams whipped the Cranbrook Mount Baker Trojanettes 47-27 as Shelly Godfrey scored 19 and Sandi Lewis 18. The Trojanettes (coached by Mr Bousquet and Mr Lackey) included Jerry-Pat Armstrong, Brenda Alaric, Charlene Hoyt, Jamie Mackie, Lorie Hrisook, Susan Scott, Linda Scott, Tammy Nelligan, Julie Thibeault, Cindy Bertoia, Donna Forrest and Sharon Walmsley.
In the last quarterfinal, the Burnaby Central Wildcats dispatched the Victoria Reynolds Roadrunners 39-34 as Gloria Woodside scored 13. Marie Morrison led the Roadrunners with 9. The Roadrunners (coached by Rick Tschritter) also included Rhonda Keller.
In the semis, the Salmon Arm Jewels defeated the Victoria High Totems 52-48 as Cathy Raymond scored 15, while 5-10 Bev Smith, a grade 10 student, added 14, Cathy Ann Jameson 9, Allison Towriss 6, Shelley Ames 4 and Janice Bianco 3. The Jewels led 41-37 after three quarters and then Raymond hit three 25-footers in a 90 second span to give Salmon Arm a 49-41 lead. Victoria seemed lost during a five-minute stretch with Shelley Godfrey on the bench. “I think it forced them off their game a bit. It rattled them,” Jewels co-coach Joe Kupkee told Canadian Press. Godfrey led the Totems with 29 but injured her ankle in driving for a layup that had put Victoria ahead 31-29. Post Sandy Lewis added 18.
In the other semi, the Victoria Mount Douglas Rams defeated the Burnaby Central Wildcats 32-31 as Marie Morrison scored 9. Gloria Woodside led the Wildcats with 13.
In the bronze medal match, the Victoria High Totems defeated the Burnaby Central Wildcats 45-40 as Sandy Lewis scored 31. The Wildcats included Gloria Woodside.
In the final, Bev Smith, Cathy Raymond and Allison Towriss launched a string of four consecutive Salmon Arm crowns with a resounding 46-37 defeat of the Victoria Mount Douglas Rams. Although Mount Douglas had thrashed Salmon Arm by 20 points a scant three weeks earlier in a mid-season tourney, the Jewels had played that game without stars Bev Smith and guard Allison Towriss. The junior high star, Smith sparked the victory. She was the “total difference,” said Mount Douglas coach Lee Dorey. Smith scored 15 and dominated the boards against Mount Douglas center Marie Morrison. Allison Towriss added 8, Shelley Ames 7 and Cathy Raymond 6. The Jewels led 12-9, 25-15 and 39-24 at the quarters. Marie Morrison led the Rams with 12. Leslie Cross added 10.
