In the final, the 7th-seeded Dawson Creek Ron Pettigrew Christian Lions clipped the 4th-seeded Langley Credo Christian Kodiaks 69-58 after leading 15-10, 38-19 and 50-37 at the quarters. Lions co-coach Dianne Tower, daughter of principal Ron Pettigrew, who was killed 28 years earlier when a van from Bethel Christian School which was headed to the first BC Single-A tourney, was involved in a crash (which also took the lives of the school’s coach and five players) said she found herself thinking of her father midway through the fourth quarter. “I was thinking about it when it looked like we were going to win,” Tower told the Vancouver Province. “I said to myself ‘There are some people cheering us on from above’.” Ron Pettigrew Christian was formed a year after the accident by Pettigrew’s widow and several former staffers of Bethel Christian. “It’s just so surreal right now, but I am just so happy for all of our players because they remind me of my dad,” said Tower, co-coach with husband Brent. “These boys are so generous, so noble and they are teammates to each other. Today is a day of victory, and we all feel so blessed and grateful. It hasn’t sunk in yet but I am sure I will shed some tears tonight.” Guard Garrett Tower said “we do a lot of running. We do a lot of conditioning and we all love to play so we play the game all summer. In the gym, we run lines until we puke.” The Lions played an iron five. Tower hit a 30-footer with 1:14 left in the third quarter to give the Lions a 50-34 lead. The Kodiaks rallied to within 61-51 with three minutes remaining when Reuben Sikma hit three consecutive treys. But the Lions re-grouped and quelled the threat. Garrett Tower said his parents “always talk about him (his grandfather) as really inspirational. I have heard the story about the team and that they died on the way to provincials, so for me it’s so nice to be able to play basketball and fulfil things for them today.” Dianne Tower said “I told Garrett that he has a great heritage, and so today, he didn’t need to play with pressure. I told him to play with freedom. He was pretty emotional last night. It’s a great ending to a long story and it all happened a long time ago. So we just said to the team: ‘This is your moment’. You have a date with destiny, so just go out and play’.” Lance Gavino paced the Lions with 26 on 11-27 from the floor, 2-11 from the arc, 2-5 from the line, 4 boards, 3 assists and 4 steals.
