The 3rd-seeded Abbotsford Christian Knights edged the 6th-seeded Kamloops St. Ann’s Academy Crusaders 68-62. St. Ann’s led 20-13 after one quarter. The Knights led 32-27 at the half and 49-40 after three quarters. The Crusaders used their superior size effectively as they built an early lead but Abby Christian cranked up the defensive pressure in the second quarter and then opened the second half with a 5-0 run as they took command. Justin Thiessen led Abbotsford Christian with 20 and was chosen player of the game for the Knights. Reuben Vanderveen added 13. Tyler Toporowski led the Crusaders with 17. Eric Bryenton added 14 and was chosen player of the game for St. Ann’s.
In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver Westpoint Grey Academy Grey Wolves clocked the 7th-seeded Regent Academy Royals 70-59 after leading 17-16, 38-31 and 53-46 at the quarters. In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver West Point Grey Academy Grey Wolves nipped the 3rd-seeded Abbotsford Christian Knights 64-61 despite trailing 21-14, 38-24 and 45-44 at the quarters. West Point went on a decisive 9-4 run over the final minute and a half to pull out the win. Brandon Davis had a shot at a trey to tie the game with 10 seconds to play but it bounced off the rim. Jordan Gill was chosen player of the game for Westpoint Grey. Derek Sing led the Grey Wolves with 24. Kelvin Cheung added 12. Brandon Davis led the Knights with 16. Mark Vanderwal added 10 and was chosen player of the game for Abbotsford Christian.
In the other semi, the top-seeded Kelowna Christian Knights whipped the 12th-seeded Langley Christian Lightning 86-65 after leading 25-18, 53-31 and 66-47 at the quarters. Kelowna Christian opened with an 8-2 run in the romp. A decisive 22-4 run to start the second quarter proved decisive. Tyler Lintell dominated the paint for the Knights, while Colby Maier bombed away from the perimeter. The Lightning had no answer for either. Maier led the Knights with 27. Lintell added 26. Matt Hansen paced Langley Christian with 23. Drew Hansen added 17.
In the bronze medal match, the 12th-seeded Langley Christian Lightning dumped the 3rd-seeded Abbotsford Christian Knights 66-57 after leading 22-19, 39-28 and 52-40 at the quarters. The Lightning took a double-digit lead in the first half but the Knights rallied within six down the stretch before Langley Christian stiffened its defence and held on for the win. The Lightning hit 11 treys, while the Knights hit two. Matt Hansen paced the Lightning with 18. Evan Fisher added 16. Reuben Vanderveen led Abbotsford Christian with 12. Brandon Davis added 10. “Going in as the number 12 wasn’t what we wanted, but that didn’t keep us from fighting for the position we thought we should be in,” said Langley Christian coach Matt Van Muyen. Forward Matt Hansen added that “coming in ranked twelfth and finishing third is definitely satisfying. We knew we were an outstanding team. We weren’t ashamed of playing for the bronze.” Reegan Willms added that “we were confident. We just knew we had to keep working hard.” Andrew Hansen added that “it felt good to medal. A good way to finish the high school sports career.” Abby Christian coach Keith Stewart was proud of the fourth-place finish. “Our motto has been to have no regrets when you’re done. And every kid on our team gave it their all.” The Knights (coached by Stewart, assisted by Stuart Baker and Jackie Stewart) also included Tylar Postma, Suwa Itto, Justin Thiessen, Ben Veerman, Curtis Van Dorp, Aaron Penner, Nathan Beukens, Corwin Timmermans, Mark Vanderwal and Ray Rypma.
In the final, the top-seeded Kelowna Christian Knights dumped the 2nd-seeded Vancouver Westpoint Grey Academy Grey Wolves 72-61 after leading 17-15, 32-28 and 51-43 at the quarters. An 8-0 run at the start of the second half proved the difference as the Knights captured their second consecutive provincial title. They didn’t lose a game all year to an A opponent. Westpoint “came ready to play us and we were dodging bullets for 40 minutes,” said Knights head coach Gib Hinz. “There was a moment there where I thought I’d better start preparing my silver medal speech. But the guys did what they had to do. I think the experience of last year’s provincials carried us in the end. The other teams came prepared to play us and gave us a tough time. We didn’t play our best but managed to pull through.” The Knights opened the third quarter with a 12-3 run to take control of the final, but West Point Grey rallied back in the fourth quarter to make it a two-point game. Then with two minutes left, Dan Benson nailed a key three-pointer to open up a seven-point lead and the Knights hung on for the win. Dan Benson scored 21, including six treys for the Knights. Colby Maier also scored 21, while Tyler Lintell tossed in 20. Derek Sing led the Grey Wolves with 17. Kelvin Cheung added 11.
