In the final, the Victoria Lambrick Park Lions edged the Victoria St. Michaels University Blue Jags 70-64. The Blue Jags led 16-10 after one quarter and 32-30 at the half. The Lions led 54-41 after three quarters. Lions coach Ed Somers, whose Grade 9 sons Austen and Calvin scored a combined 19, won his sixth provincial crown. “It’s elation, being down two at the half and having played so many tough games with St. Mike’s,” Somers told the Vancouver Province. “I knew what we had, I knew what they had, and I knew it would come down to execution, effort, commitment and luck. But it was exciting and so fun to have my sons there.” The Lions and Blue Jags met six previous times over the course of the season and SMUS held a 4-2 edge heading into Saturday’s tilt. “It was probably the hardest thing I have ever done in my coaching career,” said Somers about facing the same foe seven times. “And the strange thing is, the team that finished second on the Island (like the Lions did this season), has traditionally won the provincials. That tells you how tight things are.” St. Michaels broke to an early lead but the Lions kept pounding the ball inside to Matthew Neufeld. “They play 80 per cent zone, and he stands in the middle of their 2-3 (zone) and he’s 6-foot-10 and athletic,” Blue Jags coach Ian-Hyde Lay told the Province. “We’re small. That changes a lot of shots right there. But I felt like we should have been up 10-or-15 points at the half. I just thought that around the basket we missed a lot of easy ones. And then in the third quarter we were poor, and then we got pounded on with Neufeld dominating the boards. We got behind and we and couldn’t get a grip on the game, to play to our defensive strengths. We gambled with trapping zones, which is not really what we do, but we were forced into it by our own making. But hey, we had seven great games with them this year. We might have had the advantage overall, but your season is judged on your last one, and this is not unfair. I am so proud of my guys. Lambrick was better on the day.” Neufeld said “it just feels great to win this in your Grade 12 year, we worked so hard all year.” Tournament MVP and defensive player of the tournament Matthew Neufeld paced the Lions with 20 on 8-13 from the floor, 4-11 from the line, 17 boards, 2 assists and 6 blocks.
