Pre-tourney top-seed Holy Cross shook off a semi-final loss to Kelowna Christian and weathered a stiff test from Lambrick Park in the 3-4 game. Lambrick were right in it until a stretch when 6’9” Matt Neufeld had to sit with four fouls, during which time Holy Cross built a solid margin that the Lions never could overcome. The Lions hit 27-57 (.474) from the floor, 12-31 (.387) from the arc and 9-17 (.529) from the line, while garnering 32 boards, including 10 on the offensive glass, 14 fouls, 14 assists, 25 turnovers, 3 blocks and 5 steals. The Lions (coached by Ed Somers, assisted by Chris Ball and Wes Lefsrud) also included Eric Mar and Chris Fougner.
In the final, the Kelowna Christian Knights dumped 2nd-seeded Mill Bay Brentwood 58-47. The Knights were stepping up to the AA level after winning four of the previous five provincial titles at the A level. Brentwood led 11-6 after one quarter. The Knights led 27-16 at the half and 41-32 after three quarters. Rookie coach Eva Lintell said the Knights’ success was due to the players’ commitment to one another, on and off the court. “Our team core values are brotherhood, selflessness, integrity, respect and persistence,” she said. “The players played well together because they trust each other and play with their core values in mind.” Brentwood coach Blake Gage said “it was terrific. It was there for us, too. I think the best team won, to be honest with you. They were very athletic, a lot of threats. It was a very winnable game for us.” Gage added that the Knights did a good job of shutting down Jordan Charles. “They made Jordan’s chances really tough.’’ Jason Tran was stellar defensively, Gage added. “Defensively, I thought he was the best player in the tournament. He absolutely locked out the other team’s best players. … We didn’t make our goals about getting to or winning provincials. We just really talked about being as good as we could be by the middle of February. It’s been about team all year.’’ The game got away in the second quarter, Gage said. “There was nine or 10 really good teams there. I think Kelowna Christian definitely separated themselves a bit.’’ Tournament MVP Drew Schulz paced the Knights with 17 on 8-14 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 1-1 from the line, 8 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals. Daniel Seinen added 12 on 5-9 from the floor, 2-3 from the line, 7 boards and 2 assists. Jordan Hass added 9 on 4-10 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 1-1 from the line, 3 boards and 2 assists. Eric Langlios added 7 on 3-5 from the floor and 1-3 from the arc. Ethan Klukas added 7 on 3-9 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 1-2 from the line, 3 boards and 2 steals. Ryan Linttell notched 5 on 1-5 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 2-4 from the line, 4 boards, 2 assists and 7 steals. Connor Loewen scored 1, along with 2 boards, while Bryce Mathews was scoreless. The Knights hit 24-56 (.429) from the floor, 2-17 (.118) from the arc and 8-13 (.615) from the line, while garnering 34 boards, including 9 on the offensive glass, 10 fouls, 15 assists, 22 turnovers, 3 blocks and 15 steals. Jordan Charles paced Brentwood with 20 on 7-15 from the floor, 3-8 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 7 boards and 2 assists. Ulas Zeyrek added 16 on 8-14 from the floor, 10 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals. Jason Tran added 8 on 4-10 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 0-2 from the line, 3 boards, 4 assists and 4 steals. Shalev Sharabi added 3 on 1-7 from the arc, 3 boards and 3 steals. William Lee, Timothy Liu and Hayden Frish were scoreless. Lee nabbed 5 boards, dished 2 assists and stole 2 balls. Frisch nabbed 3 boards. Brentwood hit 20-54 (.370) from the floor, 4-17 (.235) from the arc and 3-8 (.375) from the line, while garnering 37 boards, including 10 on the offensive glass, 15 fouls, 11 assists, 24 turnovers, 1 block and 13 steals.
