In the semis, the top-seeded Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Vikings nipped the Kamloops Westsyde Whundas 61-57 as Tylor Hyd scored 25 and Bran Van Dolah 18. Hynd told Kamloops This Week that he’d heard rumours that the Whundas planned to shut him down in the paint. “Oh, I was motivated all right. I heard they said they could shut me down. I wanted to show them what I can do.” The 6-9 post added the Vikings were determined to return to the final, having lost to Prince Rupert a year earlier. “That’s what we were aiming for all year and we made it. (That loss) hurt bad. It’s been our goal since then to get back here and show them what we should have done last year. We should have won it last year.” The Vikings led 14-12 after one quarter. The Whundas led 32-26 at the half, took the lead in the third quarter and never again trailed. Whundas coach Del Komarniski said “it was tough getting in by Tyler. He did a great job. That’s one of the best games I’ve seen that kid play and I’ve seen him play a lot.” David Armstrong paced the Whundas with 26. Corey Semeniuk added 14. The teams were collectively whistled for 29 fouls.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Victoria Lambrick Park Lions defeated the Surrey Fraser Valley Christian Falcons 83-54. The Falcons had enough problems to worry about containing Steve Moore and Grant Fedorak of Victoria Lambrick Park, which is when their problems were compounded as Keenan Cross went on a hot perimeter shooting spree as Lambrick Park stormed to a 55-33 half-time lead. Cross swished four second quarter three-pointers, while Steve Moore finished with 21 points and Grant Fedorak added 20. Lambrick Park led 30-18 after the first quarter as they were never pushed, with Fraser Valley scoring paced by Steve Rogalsky with 15 and David Bron added 13.
In the bronze medal match, the Surrey Fraser Valley Christian Falcons dispatched the Kamloops Westsyde Whundas 80-64 after leading 35-29 at the half. Luke Krueger paced the Falcons with 27, including 7 treys. David Bron added 17. Dave Armstrong paced the Whundas with 25. Corey Semeniuk added 18. The Whundas also included Dusen Magdolen, Ryan Kerr, Aidan Murray.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Victoria Lambrick Park Lions defeated the Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Vikings 77-57. The Lions in-your-face defence and overall team speed proved too much for the top-seeded Vikings to handle. The game was tied 11-11 at the quarter and was still close at the half, with Lambrick Park up 35-31, but a run of ten straight points midway in the third quarter made for a critical swing, keyed by two base-line three-pointers by Lambrick perimeter sniper and tournament MVP Steve Moore. Lambrick just had more offensive weapons on this night, combined with the fact that Nechako seldom successfully found their 6-9 post Tylor Hynd, who had just four points and a single field goal in the second half. Relegated to a perimeter attack only Lambrick had Nechako outnumbered, and in turn used their team speed to create considerable havoc inside at both ends of the court. Moore scored 37 points, while Keenan Cross added 20, including 4 treys. Nechako’s Brad Van Dolah scored 32. Tylor Hynd added 13. Lambrick Park finished 34-5 on the season. Gavin Fedorak scored 10. “What won for us was every player on this squad bought the team concept,” coach Ed Somers told the Victoria Times-Colonist. “Patient, deliberate offence; they worked to get the best shot to the right player at the right time. It was a battle to get back after shutting down, but the team went right to work with our system of running and pressing.” Defensive player of the tournament Evan Janzen headed up the Lambrick defence, with Kellen Holden and Grant Fedorak switching off to help the team keep its points-against total under 60 all season. In the final, Janzen’s main task was keeping Nechako’s six-foot-nine Brad Van Dolah under control. The Lions finished 34-5 on the season. Steve Moore told Kamloops This Week that “we ran. We responded to getting pushed to the perimeter and we ran them … We wanted to get them tired and get the big guy out of the game. We were able to do that. … (Working hard) was what we stressed. We knew that if we wanted it more, we’d win.”
