In the quarterfinals, the Langley D.W. Poppy Red Hawks defeated the 3rd-seeded Kelowna K.L.O. Cougars 92-80. The Cougars included Jamie Bennett.
The Comox Highland Raiders clocked the Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Vikings 78-65 as Colin Cunningham scored 23. “We couldn’t hit a thing,” Vikings coach Ron Van Dolah told the Prince George Citizen. “We were down 18-5 after the first quarter, and we normally scored 20 points in a quarter. They’ve got a big, solid team. They’ve got a lot of guys 6-4, 6-5, where our guys are kind of raily. Down here, you’ve got to have a big team.” Joel Mueller led the Vikings with 20. Al Penner added 17. The Vikings also included Jesse Andres, Keith Doerksen, Darryl Friesen.
The top-seeded Agassiz Chieftains crushed the Ladysmith 49ers 81-44. The 49ers included Jason Thomas, Preston Chase, Troy Holmgren, Chris Laing.
In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver St. George’s Saints defeated the Garibaldi Rebels 95-82 as Doug Grant scored 26. Steve Kavanaugh led the Rebels with 35.
In the semis, the Langley D.W. Poppy Red Hawks clipped the Vancouver St. George’s Saints 83-72.
In the other semi, the Agassiz Chieftains dispatched the Comox Highland Raiders 74-67.
In the bronze medal match, the Vancouver St. George’s Saints dispatched the Comox Highland Raiders 82-77 as Doug Bodel scored 25. Colin Cunningham led the Raiders with 26. The Raiders also included David Wang.
In the final, the Langley D.W. Poppy Red Hawks captured the crown for the second time as they defeated the Agassiz Chieftains 72-52 as Dave Buchanan scored 31, Mark Cary 12 and Brian Hansen 10. Andrew Kowalenko led the Chieftains with 24. Buchanan told the Langley Advance that “we didn’t hold back. Once you get to the final, you’ve got nothing to lose. You’re only here once and we just went after it.” Cary said “it feels wonderful. It’s something I’ve never experience before.” Red Hawks coach Greg Leino said “my goal was to keep them below 30 at the half, which we did, and below 60 for the game. We basically played a balance game right from the first to the second half.” Steve Dyck and Brian Hansen outrebounded Agassiz’s Kraig Tyfting and 6-7 Chris Spence. Agassiz coach Stewart Sonne said “I don’t look at anyone scoring a lot of point necessarily a negative factor for the defence. Sometimes you have to give credit to the offence and in this case, credit is fully deserved.” Leino said “in the third and fourth quarters, they were pressing and they were playing at a speed they couldn’t play at. We took it to them all night and that frustrated them.”
