In the quarterfinals, the host Burnaby St. Thomas More Knights opened with a 76-44 win over the Barriere Cougars as Len Spencer scored 19 and Barry Cahill 18. The Cougars were coached by Jack Wood.
The Midway Boundary Central Cougars whipped the Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Vikings 75-56. The Vikings (coached by Ron Van Dolah) included Dave Van Dolah, Brian Fehr, Oliver Timmins, Wayne Woods, Bill Maslechko, Dave Fehr, Rob Stephen, Jim Donaldson, Darcy Mann, Greg Van Dolah, Harold Penner, Mark Clifford, Glen Van Winkle, Mark Derksen, Bruce Lahar, Lyle Jansen and John Ruffell.
The Gibsons Elphinstone Cougars dispatched the Houston Shadows (now the Wolverines) 78-75 (also reported as 78-74) as Frank Havies scored 21 and Wayne Smith 18. Don Janzen led the Shadows with 33. Tim Janzen added 22. The Shadows also included Andy Meints.
In the last quarterfinal, the Shawnigan Lake Stags dispatched the Invermere David Thompson Lakers 84-58 as Ian Leitch scored 22 and Ian Hyde-Lay 16.
In the semis, the Burnaby St. Thomas More Knights defeated the Midway Boundary Central Cougars 73-50 as Len Spencer scored 20, Barry Cahill 14 and Mike McCarthy 14. Boundary was led by Ciunnan Hall 15 and Pete Hadikin 11.
In the other semi, the Shawnigan Lake Stags defeated the Gibsons Elphinstone Cougars 88-74 as Ian Leach scored 34, and Bruce Brown 10. Elphinstone was led by Wayne Smith’s 20 and Frank Havies 16.
In the bronze medal match, the Gibsons Elphinstone Cougars dispatched the Midway Boundary Central Cougars 71-57.
In the final, the Burnaby St. Thomas More Knights nipped the Shawnigan Lake Stags 71-68 as Len Spencer scored 22, Barry Cahill 17 and Michel Deslauriers 17. The Stags were paced by Ian Leitch 19, Bruce Brown 16 and point guard Ian Hyde-Lay 10. Hyde-Lay, who nearly 20 years later coached Victoria St. Michaels University to its first AAA crown after playing on several CIAU championship teams at the University of Victoria, was selected the tourney MVP. The victory also marked the emergence of coach Rich Goulet as a force in B.C. boys’ basketball as his troops won the first of two consecutive titles in the all-private school final.
