In the final, after the Victoria Oak Bay Bays had rallied for 14 behind to cut the margin to two, a pair of free throws by Dave Reich with seven seconds to go clinched a 52-48 victory for the North Surrey Spartans. Heavily favored to win the tourney all year as they returned five senior starters who’d made it to the semi-finals of the provincial tourney a year earlier, North Surrey finished 35-1 on the season. But the season wasn’t easy. Pat Cahill had broken his foot early in the season. Erick Buecke had torn an ankle ligament. 6-9 centre Kirk Randa was out for the last four weeks of the season with a knee injury. Charles Olsen had suffered tonsillitis. Still, the final belonged to North Surrey as Reich scored 21 and confused Oak Bay with his quick drives to the basket. Bob Dudley added 12, Charles Olsen 9, Nick Berzins 6 and Pat Cahill 4, while Colin Wilkie, Rob Smith, Tony Munoz, Brian Cornwall and Eric Buecker were scoreless. North Surrey was ahead 28-26 at the quarter and opened the second with a 3-4 court press, while alternating between a man-to-man and a zone in their backcourt. Oak Bay coach Don Horwood said that confused his troops. Horwood later noted Reich was “the key. He did it to us. We worked so hard at keeping their big guys away from the basket, but Reich just popped them in every time.” After North Surrey went ahead by 14, they tried to stall and it almost backfired before Reich hit the key winning free throws late in the game. Coach Robert Arden noted “I felt we should play a delaying game. But instead of penetrating their press to get some easy layups, we tried working the ball around in the forecourt. They got some easy steals and made the finish very interesting.” Ken Kirzinger and Craig Higgins each scored 12 to pace the Bays. Charlie Fisher added 10, Mike Miller 8, Dave Richmond 4 and Steve Leung 2, while Brant Cathcart, Wayne Bryan, Tom Sinnott and Rick Hatchman were scoreless. Oak Bay outrebounded North Surrey 40-28.
