The North Delta Huskies won their second crown in five years as Mike Kenis led them to a 72-57 victory over the Richmond Colts. Richmond seemed in control in the first half of the final against North Delta, leading 34-32 at the break as the Huskies looked sluggish and tired. North Delta’s sold bright spot was Mike Kenis who scored 18 in the first half. But the Huskies came out of the break firing on all cylinders, shooting 10-19 in the third quarter while the Colts were a dismal 4-21 from the floor. Bren Ennis and Stu Fitzpatrick alternated the centre spot and harassed Richmond’s Gary Emmerson on defence, holding him scoreless in the third quarter and allowing him only four points in fourth. Chuck McIntosh, who’d scored 11 points in the first half, scored only two in the second before fouling out with 7:30 to go. Kenis finished with 26, Wayne Corness 18, Ennis 12, John Buis 6, Greg Sharpe 5, Stu Fitzpatrick 4 and Jones 1 for the Huskies. Richmond was led by Cunningham 18, Marjan Markota 13, Chuck McIntosh 13, Gary Emmerson 11 and Ian Kishi 10. North Delta coach Bill Edwards noted that “at half time, we decided we’d come too far not to win it. All our efforts would have been wasted. We felt we deserved to win.” The Huskies finished (33-7) on the season. Colts coach Bill Drisbow told the Richmond Observor “in a couple of weeks our effort will look pretty good. We seemed to lack a little intensity in the second half but you have to give North Delta credit. They were making the clutch shots and their man-to-man defence put a lot of pressure on our forwards. … I thought our team showed a lot of class at the end. Sometimes, when teams get behind in the final, they panic, they get frustrated and start fouling. But I thought our team stayed on them until the end.”
