The heavy tournament favorite Victoria Oak Bay Bays, sporting a 25-0 record, breezed into the final riding a 38-game, two year winning streak and having twice thrashed the Victoria High Totems during the regular season. But the Totems, coached the legendary George ‘Porky’ Andrews, a big believer in fundamentals and ball control offence, upset Oak Bay 38-37 in overtime to win the provincial boys title. Oak Bay opened the contest with a 19-15 lead, alternating from a man-to-man to a 1-3-1 zone. Victoria High opened in a 2-1-1 zone with 6-5 Dave Mulcahy focusing on containing 6-4 tourney MVP Tommy Holmes. The Bays overloaded the zone and played catch in an attempted to pull Victoria High away from the basket, while trying to pound the ball inside to Holmes. But Mulcahy overplayed him and forced him outside to the baseline for short jumpers. In the second half alone, Mulcahy blocked five Holmes’ shots. The fourth block occurred with 1:18 left on the clock and the scored tied at 31. Victoria High’s 6-3 Gordon Hoshal then drove on 5-11 Brent Mullin and hit a fadeaway 12-foot jumper to put Victoria ahead 33-31. Holmes tied it for Oak Bay with two free throws with 46 seconds to go. In overtime, Jerry Vanderjagt hit a layup and a free throw when he was fouled to give Victoria HS the early lead. Holmes hit a 15-footer but Mulcahy blocked him again with 19 seconds to go. Hoshal iced the game with two free throws with five seconds to go and the clock ran out shortly after Mullin had driven in for a meaningless layup. Mike Chornoby paced Victoria High with 19.
