Trapp Tech amalgamated with arch-rival Duke of Connaught as New Westminster Lester Pearson and won the title by defeating the Vancouver Magee Lions 58-51 in the final and placing four team members on the all-star squad: George Grozier, Don Krego, Ken Winslade and Dave McDonald. The squad also included reserve Stan Stewardson, who later coach North Delta to the 1971 title and then assumed the helm at Simon Fraser University. Stewardson said 50 years later that he believed the squad was the province’s best ever. Pearson had two giants in 6-7 George Crozier and 6-6 Don Krego and a raft of quick guards. They befuddled opponents with a zone. Years later, Ken Winslade, who for decades was a BC boys tournament executive, told the Vancouver Province that “the thing about that Pearson team was that it had an incredible combination of skill and height. And it was athletic height. We never powered the ball inside. I can’t remember us even having a play, as such. It was more like, ‘Get the ball to Krego!’ or, ‘Beat your guy’!” Don Krego paced the Mikes with 24. Dave MacDonald added 13, Ken Windslade 9, Ron Rebagliati 6, George Crozier 4 and Dick Gillespie 2, while Swan, Nicholson, Maclean, Carley and Stan Stewartson were scoreless.
