Aleah Marton led the Generals with 20. Beth Thorne and Sarah Holmes each scored 9 to lead the Cougars. The bronze represented the 10th-consecutive medal the Generals won at OFSAA. “The defense was there for the whole tournament,” said Generals coach Dom Silvaggio. “The offense was in and out. … You’ve got to be happy with the way the kids played. They came a long way from the beginning of the year, that’s for sure. They earned every bit of it. I couldn’t ask any more from the kids’ effort-wise. They gave 100 percent. On the whole, they worked hard during practices and worked hard during games. Christine Sirgnano added 10. After a disappointing loss in the York regionals, “we wanted to finish well,” said Tinnes. “I don’t think at the start gold was on our mind but we just kept going. We just played our game and didn’t worry about anyone else. This is very exciting. … The ball just kept coming to me but my teammates were on their game, too,” said Tinnes, one of the graduating members of the team. “When we play our game it’s tough to stop us.” Huskies coach Jackie Zicaro said “our composure at the end was awesome. St. Francis was coming back in the last quarter. It was the longest six minutes of my life. We were just happy to be playing Saturday. We’d reached that goal then the girls really got going. Once we beat (Toronto) Oakwood in the quarter-final, I thought we had a good shot at a medal. When we beat Welland (Centennial), I thought we had a really good shot at this and taking a gold. For our eight graduating players I couldn’t ask for a better ending for them.” Zicaro added that point guard Brie Rurak was “unreal. Brie is our quarterback out there and she’s just so mentally tough.” Phoenix coach Pat O’Leary told the St. Catherines Standard that “they were a solid team with some nice guards. We just couldn’t dial it back up for the final. We were a bit tired, shots weren’t falling and it just wasn’t our night.”
