The division was temporarily/initially established in 1953 as a part of the Golden Ball Tournament for schools whose male enrolment under 225 students. In the initial year, it was held in conjunction with the A draw at Ryerson in Toronto. It was known as Division A from 67-68 thru 71-72. The champion is presented with L.G. Balfour Trophy. AA classification in low density areas is restricted to schools having a student population under 600 or all-boys schools having an enrolment under 300. At one point, it was classified as schools in a population centre under 60,000, with an enrolment under 699.
