With Mychal Mulder, the Catholic Central Comets’ best interior option, sidelined by foul trouble, guard Shavon Gayle said “it was very important for me to step up offensively with our foul trouble. It wasn’t just me though. “It allowed a lot of guys to get more of the ball and the opportunity to shoot. We moved the ball really well today.” Comets coach Pete Cusumano said “they were trying to isolate us in the post. They were a little bigger than us across the board. We had to make some adjustments at halftime. “The Comets went dry for a while after Mulder’s departure allowing the Wildcats to close to within 27-20 late in the quarter. But in the last 19 seconds, Gayle made an emphatic rejection of Garrett Eddy’s shot and then banged down a three just ahead of the buzzer to make it 35-23 at the break. It took the Comets less than four minutes to put the game out of reach in the third quarter as they jumped to a 44-29 lead. “We just put the pressure on their guards all the time,” said the 5-10 Gayle. We forced them to turn the ball over and they had to settle for threes. We had a great tournament, it’s just disappointing coming so close and losing by two.” Dyshawn Pierre dominated as Anderson built a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. “When we were down, you could see it in our body language, it felt like we were going to lose,” Dooley said. “Then we got a couple of steals and Grant hit a couple of big shots.” Notre Dame reeled off eight straight and got one last chance in the final seconds.
