In the final, Michelle Tilford scored 21 and Stephanie Nelson 18 as the Birch Hills Marauders defeated the Meath Park Mustangs 67-54. Birch Hills led 36-19 at the half. Lisa Zelensky and Lori Truba each scored 12 for Meath Park. “We’ve played volleyball and basketball with them and against them, so we know each other pretty well,” Marauder guard Michelle Tilford told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “It’s too bad we had to beat them in the final, but we wanted to win it.” The match-up represented the first time in Hoopla history that two schools from the same rural division have contested a championship. Marauders coach Ken Morrison told the Prince Albert Daily Herald that “we played the kind of game we wanted to. We didn’t want to run around against a team like Meath Park. We tried to control the tempo and not have too many outbounding situations where there’s a lot of layups.” Mustangs coach Bry Swystun said a slow start undid his troops. “We did play well. Birch Hills was ready for the game, being bridesmaids last year and all. They got off to a quick start and we got down early. But we did battle back to make it an interesting game.” It was the third Hoopla appearance in five years for Birch Hills. The Marauders lost to Wishart in the final last year. It was the first trip to the provincial championship for Meath Park, a team formed just three years ago. Morrison said the experience of last year’s final might have helped Birch Hills mentally prepare for the game. Morrison added that “we showed nerves in the first game against Wolseley. But after that first half of that first game, we settled down. By the time we played in the championship, I think the experience helped us. We just got our jitterbugs out and played our game.” Mustangs coach Bryan Swystun said “there were more nerves in the opening game. Most basketball people there thought it would be Kenaston and Birch Hills in the final, and our players could hear that in the crowd. But then we came out and surprised everyone,” Swystun said. “By the time we played in Saturday’s final, it felt like a tournament final game in Kinistino or Nipawin or something. It didn’t feel like anything different than another tournament, probably because it was against Birch Hills and we play them so often.”
