Spartan Meagan Gergley told the Regina Leader-Post that “we knew not to be too high on ourselves just because we won the city. We had to treat it like any other game – just go out and play hard.” Esmail said “I think we just panicked. We had it at halftime – it was close – but we let in slip about the 10-minute mark of the second half. We couldn’t get it back. They didn’t make us panic. We panicked ourselves with the score. With 10 minutes left, we thought the game was over. We’re a young team so the experience plays a big factor.”

In the bronze medal match, the Regina F.W. Johnson Wildcats clipped the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears 86-65 as Carla Selinger scored 22. Laura Esmail led the Bears with 23. Marg Lukowich added 17. Borger said “before the game, I just decided it was going to be my best game ever. It was my last game forever, so I made it a good one.” Spartan Jaime Stewart told the Regina Leader-Post that “in the first half, everybody just lost it. It was the whole idea that we had worked all year to get here and now we’re here. We had to separate ourselves from where we were. We had to think of it as just a game and not a provincial final. … We weren’t doing team things. We’re a really good team but we just lapsed. Then we started playing as a team and we showed that we can play.” Stalwick said “we just got nervous. We were up at a timeout, then we came back out and our nerves got the best of us. We knew we had to play well but we had a couple of turnovers. It’s very disappointing. We were working for it all year. It’s hard to say how disappointing it is.” The score was knotted at 33 at the half. Souls point guard Kara Hoscheit was injured in a collins with Spartan Alison Merk with six minutes to play in the first half. Though she returned in the second half, her game was off. Souls coach John Lockwood told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “when Kara got hurt, it hurt us. You have to give full marks to (Spartan) Jaime Stewart. You can see how much a quarterback means to a team.” With Spartan Mary Banting on the bench in foul trouble, Heather Stalwick, Marg Lukowich and the rebounding of Ginette Crichlow led to a 59-51 Evan Hardy lead. Banting returned with 6:36 to play and the Spartans rallied with a 9-0 run. They led 67-65 when Lukowich missed a trey. The Souls’ Darci Anderson fouled out on an attempt to rebound. Naomi Berger missed the free throws. The Souls got the rebound but Banting pilfered the ball and the Spartans ragged the ball to hang on for the win. Souls coach John Lockwood said “I’ve lost before. We had our chances but this environment hurt us. There are plenty of long faces and there will be for a long time. But when they reflect on this, they’ll remember it as an excellent experience.”
