Angela Harlton paced the Tartans with 19. Nadine Krenosky added 13. Bears coach Layra Farmer told the Regina Leader-post that “their press was a bit of a problem for us right off the Start. We had seen them play a 2-2-1 before and that’s what we were prepared for but they played more pressure defence. I think my guards were a little bit tense and they’re generally not like that. Our fast break kept us in the game, no doubt about that.” The Beras led 49-34 at the half. Harlton said “they scored every time we turned it over. That made a big difference. We knew it would be tough. We just played as hard as we could. We just didn’t keep doing what we were doing. I think we ran a patient offence and hustled on defence.” Tartans coach Bill Dietrich said “we played match-up defence and I think that surprised them. Other than that, I think we balanced our attack. We did a good job of getting inside but they’re bigger than we are.”
In the other semi, the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans whipped the Regina M.A. Riffel Royals 71-57 as Jacki Nichol scored 28, Lindy Dunlop 21 and Tracy Lizotte 10. Cyndi Knelson led the Royals with 16. And she did.” Nichol said “we wanted to prove we deserve to be here. We wanted to prove we can be in the final. Tonight, the whole team realized what we’re here for.”
In the bronze medal match, the Regina Campbell Tartans dusted the Regina M.A. Riffel Royals 56-35 as Stacy Shmyr scored 24. Shmyr told the Regina Leader-Post that “we knew we had to make defence a key. We knew the offence would take care of itself.” Riffel coach Brent Breit said a semi-final injury to Bernie Synk (bruised foot) limited the Royals. “We definitely missed her. You could tell just by the way we couldn’t break the press.” Kyla Hubic led the Royals with 12. Cyndi Knelson added 10. The Royals (coached by Breit) also included Tanya Holt, Melanie Rakochy, Bernie Synk, Denise Wright.
In the final, the Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears defeated the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans 79-54 as Nan Anderson scored 19, Shawna Simpson 15 and Tara Werschler 13. Jacki Nichol paced the Trojans with 33. Lindy Dunlop added 9 and Eleanor Stepanuk 8. Simpson told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “it’s what we worked for all year. We had a major upset last year versus Riffel – we were expected to win that game – and this year we weren’t going to let anything stop us.” Although Nichol rallied the Trojans to within 47-29 in the second half, they never seriously threatened. Trojans coach Sheila Chad said “we to play the best that we can play, we knew that. But Bowman was good, they deserved to win. Bowman was definitely the better team.” Bears coach Layra Farmer said “they were tense – so were we. It’s the provincial championships. But our team wanted this one badly.” Anderson said “this is definitely the best win ever.” Jordi Knoll added that “it feels tremendous. It’s just excellent because we knew we had all the talent in the world. We get along so well and we know how to play the game of basketball.” Simpson told the Regina Leader-post “this was really important to us. We want to play Riffel though. We had a score to settle with them … We were really crushed by what happened last year. We worked so hard and then, when we got there, we were a little overconfident. We were making sure that didn’t happen this year.” The Bears led 47-29 at the half. Nichol said “we just get any shots to drop.”
