In the provincial semis, the Saskatoon Mount Royal Mustangs edged the Regina Campbell Tartans 61-58 as Deanne Bakker scored 23 and Jackie Farrow 12. Mustangs coach Irene Wallace told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “what they are is quick. No doubt this is the quickest group I’ve had. … The difference is we may have been a little more controlled.” Bakker iced the win with the steal of an inbounds pass with 30 seconds to play. Wallace said Bakker “plays with as much composure as any high school kid can play with. I’ve coached her four years now and I’ve never seen her lose her cool or give up. Nothing upsets her.” Jill Hunt led the Tartans with 21 and Deanne Shmyr 12. Tartans coach Bill Dietrich told the Regina Leader-Post that “we just spent a half hour in the locker room trying to find reasons. But in three-point games, close games, it’s the coach’s responsibility. It’s usually something you should have done. … some play that could have been called.” The Mustangs led 35-26 at the half and ripped off a 12-0 run early in the second half. Bakker said “we just kept our control. We took our time and played defensively until we got our chances. We knew if we were consistent, we could beat them.”
In the other semi, the Regina Balfour Redmen clubbed the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 72-57 as Deanna Powell and Shannon Thomson each scored 23. Susan Schoenhals added 10. Redmen coach Wendy Bileski told the Regina Leader-post that “it was a complete turnaround from the Regina city finals. I swear they were two different teams. The team in the city finals was slow and making mistakes. It was no comparison to how the girls were playing tonight. We played how we were capable of playing.” Thomson said “we had to improve on moving the ball. That was our first step. We really improved on defence and our blocking out. And we communicated out there. We let each other know what was going on.” Powell said “we had nothing to lose. It was our last chance to do something and we came out playing our hardest. I don’t think they expected that.” Colleen Larson led the Marauders with 20. Stacey Singler added 16.
In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders dispatched the Regina Campbell Tartans 62-52 as Jan Morris scored 14 and Colleen Larson 13. Jill Hunt led the Tartans with 22. Deanne Shmyr added 16. The Tartans (coached by Bill Dietrich) also included Eden Phillip.
In the final, the Saskatoon Mount Royal Mustangs defeated the Regina Balfour Redmen 64-59 as Deanne Bakker scored 27 and Joanne Prosky 13. Deanne Powell led the Redmen with 19. Shannon Thomson added 17. On six consecutive possessions in the second half, Balfour couldn’t get across midcourt, what with point guard Deanne Powell on the bench in foul trouble. When she left, Balfour led 35-29. When she returned, Mount Royal led 44-37. Mustangs coach Irene Wallace told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “when I think back to November (an 0-4 start on the season), there were times I went home wondering if I could stay with it. It looked it was going to be another one of those seasons. … (The turnaround) wasn’t any one game. It was more like a building process.” Wallace said the Mustangs “weren’t too sorry) to see Powell “sit down. We had a meeting tonight to take about (Balfour’s physicality). I told them, don’t let (intimidation) play a factor.” Deanne Bakker said from the start of the season, “we always believed. … We always approached it as one game at a time. If we lost a game and played well, there was no shame. If we won and didn’t play so well, that was incentive for the next practice. The thing is, we were never satisfied with ourselves. It was always like we felt we could do better.” Balfour coach Wendy Bileski told the Regina Leader-post that “I could say a lot of things to the girls right now. You can say we were the first girls team to make it out of Balfour; you can say we tried. But they gave it all they had and right now, nothing you can say is going to make them feel any better. Next year, there’s always next year.” Susan Schoenhals said “we hung on to the end and we didn’t give up that easily.”
