Jon Lichtman led the Grizzlies with 23. It was the fourth consecutive title for the Eagles. “There’s some strong history here, all the way back to 1995,” says sixth-year coach Aaron Benneweis. It’s been here for a while and I got the benefit of coming on a machine that was already running pretty good.” Unlike previous championship units, the Eagles roster featured nine players six feet or taller and the Eagles had to shift their identity. “Compared to other years, we have some height this year,” says starting point guard Kyle Donauer. “And we’re able to get it down the floor and fastbreak. I’d say it puts more pressure on me. Last year, there were more guards, so I knew if I wasn’t able to do it there was someone else. This year, there’s more posts and they’re all relying on the guards.” The players adapted well. “I think it’s just made us stronger in rebounding and brought our game to a new level,” says forward Cody Weiler. Lichtman said “we had a great year. We have a great group of guys. We all look out for each other. We hang out outside of school. Most of us are best friends. I just came to the school two years ago and I was instantly accepted. I wouldn’t want to play for any other team -gold or silver medal.” Lichtman also lauded the gold medalists. “They were unbelievable. I’ve never played a team that good -ever -and we’ve played against 4A schools. Their teamwork, their defence – everything about them made them the toughest opponent I’ve ever played.” Kyle Donauer said winning for the fourth time “feels cool. This year is special because it’s my Grade 12 year. This year is probably the best one, I would say.”
