In the provincial quarterfinals, the 7th-seeded Saskatoon Marion Graham Falcons dumped the 2nd-seeded Regina Balfour Redmen 72-60. Guard Eric Katz told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that the Falcons were inspired by the injury of point guard Yan Kartavliuk, who broke his jaw in the Saskatoon city quarterfinals. “It hurts to be without our starting point guard, Yan, but we’re doing it for him. Now we’ve got to go all the way. His jaw is wired shut. We bought him a Booster Juice card and he can’t really order himself, so we go with him and order sometimes. We made this whole run without him, but we’re doing it for him. … The key to victory was closing out on their three’s, playing hard defence and taking them out of the game and running on them.” The Falcons broke to a 26-12 lead before Balfour responded with an 8-0 run and drew within 31-28 with 1:35 to play in the first half. Graham rebuilt its lead to 52-35 in the second half but the Redmen trimmed the margin to six with seven minutes to play. “Credit to them,” said Falcons coach Dan Dewar. “Obviously they deserved being the No. 2 seed. They had a tough one in the city final, only losing by four to LeBoldus, which has been the powerhouse for the year in high school basketball, winning BRIT and the last two provincials. They’re well coached. The guys worked hard and they wouldn’t go away – and that’s sign of their character. … Our guys were disciplined down the stretch at the end, which was good and we took care of the basketball, Defensively, we made stops and secured the ball, so that was the big thing for us. Balfour coach Tanner Brightman said “we have a resilient team. We have a lot of guys who play multiple sports, a lot of football guys. They’re never technically out of it. We faced a lot of adversity this year. We won games in double overtime and lost games in overtime, so we feel like we’re never out of it. Graham just came out and they just wanted it more today than we did.” Graham led 14-8, 35-30 and 54-46 at the quarters. Alexander Dewar paced the Falcons with 27 points. His brother, Addison, added 20. Eric Despins led Balfour with 17. Kolten Bellamy and Austin Halstead each had 11. In the other semi, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns burned the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 88-47. The Golden Suns dominated from the start, leading 26-6 after one quarter and by as many as 30 in the second quarter.

“We were really geared up to play today and our guys showed up defensively in the first – six points (allowed) in the first quarter,” LeBoldus coach Wade Bartlett told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “It was a super-good defensive effort. Our guys played really well today.” Marauders coach Trevor Mirtle said “I was a little bit taken back. We played them two times earlier in the year and we had (closer) games with them. But that being said – LeBoldus, they are one talented high school basketball team. You take one thing away, they respond and make the right reads and all of a sudden now they’ve got another weapon.” Mirtle added that Sun guard Kade Belyk “was a major impact on the game. Offensively, he was getting to the rim every time he wanted to and we had problems staying in front of him. But probably the even bigger job that he did was defensively when he matched on our top scorer (Cain Shepherd) and he really shut him down. He gave Cain some really difficult looks and made life miserable for him.” Carter Millar led the Golden Suns with 25 points.

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Marion Graham Falcons mauled the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders 89-55. The Marauders (coached by Trevor Mirtle, assisted by Scott Ferguson, Chris Fryett-Miller and Graham Black, and managed by Adam Nazarali and Eugene Lam) included Tyler Wellman, Khaled Tajik, Feroz Safi, Cameron Delahey, Kai Matisz, Ahmed Mahadhi, Conlin Dewar, Matt Benkic, Abubakar Jeilani, Cain Shepherd, Marco Yutuc, Enzo Yutuc, Taijon Dixon and Michael Reed-Wood.

They play as a team and you saw that all weekend,” said Golden Suns head coach Wade Bartlett told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “Absolutely the best team I’ve ever coached, without a doubt. Last year’s (team) was really good. This was better. I had one in ’08 that was really good, but this is the best team I’ve ever coached.” Guardians coach Brett Hoffman said “they’ve always got it rolling. They’re a very talented team across the board, whether it’s their starting five or their guys coming off the bench. They can all shoot the ball, they share the ball very well and they’re big inside.” Chan De Ciman paced the Golden Suns with 32. Stefan Grujic added 29 and Carter Millar 22. Emmanuel Akintunde led the Guardians with 25. The Golden Suns were also three-time defending provincial 4A football champions with De Ciman played on both squads in all three seasons. “It’s definitely something (not just) anybody is capable of, so I’m so proud of my team and everybody that’s coached me and brought me to this point,’ De Ciman told the Regina Leader-Post. Grujic, who’d sprained his ankle in the semis, scored 10 of the Suns first 17 points. “Right off the bat, Stefan stepped up,” Bartlett told the Leader-Post. “We didn’t even know if he was going to play. He comes out and nails a three-pointer right off the get-go – bad ankle and all. He was fabulous.”
