Redmen coach Doug Bolander told the Regina Leader-Post that “those six guys of mine are just going crazy. … Martin got into foul trouble and we started going down the centre.” …………………………………………………… In the quarterfinals, the Campbell Tartans dusted the Balfour Redmen 80-44 as Mike Peshko scored 26, Mason Pak 14 and Paul Lyzaniwski 10. Tartans coach Glenn Szabo told the Regina Leader-Post that “we still turned the ball over a lot. And we’re hurting on the boards without (injured post) Scott Chlopan, who tried playing a few minutes tonight.” Toby Frisk and Tim Leskun each scored 12 to lead the Redmen. Martin Sattler added 10. The Redmen (coached by Doug Bollander) also included Bill Deckert. …………………………………………………… The Sheldon Williams Spartans edged the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Titans 72-67 as Kevin Koster scored 26 and Pete Hryniuk 10. Trailing 65-50, the Spartans switched from a zone press to a man-to-man press. Spartans coach Spence Burgess told the Regina Leader-Post that “we had to make a last-ditch effort.” Kevin Koster said “that man-to-man press really set up Jeff Armstrong’s last steal. But I think it was that technical (intentional foul called on Titan Ken Smidt) that really sparked us.” Armstrong intercepted a pass for a runout to give the Spartans a 67-65 lead, the finishing touch on a comeback featuring 5-6 free throws by Koster, including 1-2 on Smidt’s technical. Titans coach Al Collins said “we could have won it (despite trailing 50-36 early in the second half). I knew we would come back thought. Maybe we shouldn’t have won it, but we could have.” Paul Selinger and Peter Lewis each notched 16 to pace the Titans. Garth Kuchinski added 10. The Titans (coached by Al Collins) also included Boyd Holerbaum. …………………………………………………… The Luther Lions dumped the Miller Marauders 71-64 as Bill Knudsen scored 25 and Jeff Christiansen 18. Golden Suns coach Joe Rizak told the Regina Leader-Post “that’s been our philosophy all year. Our defence is our offence. … We tried to play hard defence on (Bill) Knudsen) and (Jeff) Christensen, their big guns. Picking up all those fouls was just one of those things. That can happen when you’re not careful. But fouls are a part of the game, and you sometimes have to take them if you want to win.” Bill Knudsen led the Lions with 24. The Lions led 27-26 at the half. The Lions (coached by Dick Stark, assisted by Gary Beckie) also included Jeff Christensen, Adam Johnstone, Cam Smith, Rob Hawrysh, Lindsey Denesak, Ben Book?, Ken Phillips. …………………………………………………… In the other semi, the Sheldon-Williams Spartans clipped the Campbell Tartans 78-66 as Jeff Armstrong scored 19. We usually depend on 2 or 3 guys to carry the mail, and tonight we had 5 guys in double figures.” Tartans coach Glenn Szabo said his troops lost momentum. “We were up by one point with six minutes left. But we missed a layup and they came back and scored. They took the momentum and it was all over.” Mike Peshko led the Tartans with 30. Marauders coach Jack Seel told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we knew we had to play good defence. It’s something we spend a lot of time on. I mean a lot. And it’s something we rely on. Of course, the last time I said that, Holy Cross went out and scored 100 points on us.”

In the provincial semis, the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns edged the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans 64-60 as Darren Scraper scored 18, Cam Uhren 17 and Sean Wade 12. Rob Cherneski led the Trojans with 25. Ed Povhe added 14 and Todd Paulsen 12. The Golden Suns took an early 24-12 lead with their pressure defence and held a 40-32 lead at the half. Golden Suns coach Ron Pettigrew told the Regina Leader-Post “that’s the best shooting team we’ve seen in a long time. They really hit the long shots and with regularity. … I think the key was our patience on offence in the second half. The guys made some good shots and made the most of their opportunities. They didn’t get flustered when the game got close.” Post Lawrence Biegler said “it was tough to defence against them when they stayed outside. We just tried to move out and stay close to them.” Trojans guard Todd Paulsen said ‘we started off slow but really picked up as the game went on.”

In the other semi, the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders edged the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans 79-76 as Jeff Balzer scored 16, Dave Denowski 12 and Mike Phillips 12. Kevin Koster led the Spartans with 19. Jeff Armstrong added 14 and Dean Mihalicz 12. Marauders coach Al Fedoruk told the Regina Leader-Post that a full-court press yielded dividends. “That’s our style. We’ve been playing full-court man-to-man press all year and it hasn’t hurt us.” Spartans coach Spence Burgess said “we had a lot of trouble with that in the first half. It seemed like our guys had no confidence to dribble the ball. That took us out of the offensive glow of the game, and it was just too much to come back against.” The Marauders led 45-33 at the half. The Spartans also included Chris White, Pete Hryniuk.

In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon E.D. Feehan Trojans dusted the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans 84-56 as Todd Paulsen scored 22. The Trojans led 42-31 at the half. Kevin Koster led the Spartans with 16. Koster told the Regina Leader-Post that “we’ve been getting off to a slow start in the last couple of games and it has hurt us. I don’t know. I guess it was a lack of intensity on our part.” Spartans coach Spence Burgess said “there aren’t any excuses. We got beat.” The Spartans also included Jeff Armstrong, Pete Hryniuk, Dean Mihalicz, Chris White.

In the provincial final, the Saskatoon Walter Murray Marauders defeated the Regina Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns 87-72. The Golden Suns led 12-4 early but the Marauders rallied to a 31-29 lead at the half. Dave Denowski led the Marauders with 24. Denowski told the Regina Leader-Post that “in the first half, we weren’t playing that well defensively. We weren’t doing to things we knew we could do. But in the second half, we really put on some terrific backcourt pressure and blocked out well too.” Guard Jeff Balzer said the full-court press proved the difference. “We’re stuck with that type of play all year. It’s a hard man-to-man and we play very aggressive.” Lawrence Biegler led the Golden Suns with 19. Biegler, Darren Scraper and Cam Uhren all fouled out for Sheldon-Williams. Spartans coach Ron Pettigrew said “that foul trouble left us with no manpower to battle them with. We’ve lived and died by our defence all year and tonight, we died with it. They just took the game away from us in the second half. They just played better than we did.” Marauders coach Jack Seel told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix “I couldn’t be happier. I can look every one of those guys in the eye and hey, they’re provincial champions. All of em. They all contributed. … That’s the thing about this team. It doesn’t matter who I send out there. They all do the job.” Jeff Balzer said “my ball was to stop the ball high. And then I got lots of help from the other guys.” Dave Denowski said “in the long run, I think our bench won it for us.”
