In the provincial quarterfinals, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders dumped the Regina Balfour Redmen 87-64 as Tim Hollman scored 19. Lucas Askew led Balfour with 17. Holy Cross led 37-28 at the half. After a sluggish first half, the Crusaders scored two seconds into the third quarter, setting a tone for the rest of the game. “We’ve got one under our belts,” Hollman told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “Hopefully we’ll get keep getting better.” The Redmen (coached by Glen Fekula) also included Lance Aldcorn, Rene Eklund, Scott Trowell, Thomas Alport, Scott Trowell.
The Regina Campbell Tartans defeated the Saskatoon Bishop J. Mahoney Saints 72-62 as Kai Williams scored 25. Nolan Brudehl paced Mahoney with 26. Campbell led 42-30 at the half. The Tartans were outplayed and outhustled for long stretches of time but still managed to do just enough to pull out a win. “To be honest, we came out a little lucky,” Williams told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “(Bishop J. Mahoney) did all the things they needed to do to win. They played with a lot of energy. We just got some good bounces, hit some shots, got a few second chance points. It was a tough game.” Bishop J. Mahoney thrived in the first and third quarters but Campbell took control back in both the second and fourth to come away with the victory. The Saints (coached by Brian Carduner) also included Adam Kowaluk, Lane Reid, Stefan Dodig.
The Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls edged Regina Winston Knoll Wolverines 72-69. It took a team effort at both ends of the court for Evan Hardy to win this one. The Souls got 34 points inside from David Neufeld, perimeter shooting from Alex Pearson, Ryan Beaudry and Tinashe Mutswangwa, and a huge stop on defence on the game’s final possession to seal the deal. “This was a good, consistent effort,” coach Jeff Colquhoun told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Rory Kohlert led Knoll with 21 points. The Wolverines (coached by Steve Burrows) also included Lynn Gee, Reid Quest, Michael Silvius, Landon Barr, Steve Comaniuk, Matt Bell, Rory Kohlert.
The Regina city champion Sheldon-Williams Spartans defeated the fourth-seeded Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians 89-66 as Kory Campbell scored 20. Brendan O’Brien paced St. Joseph with 17. The Spartans dominated buzzer to buzzer, never letting the Guardians in the game. “We didn’t come out of the gates ready to play,” Guardians coach Scott Hundseth told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. The Guardians have relied all year on attacking the basket on offence and playing aggressive baseline-to-baseline defence. Against Sheldon, they settled for perimeter jump shots. When those weren’t falling, they were unable to set up on defence, instead surrendering countless fast-break lay-ups. “We’re not fooling ourselves. We have to stick with our game plan to be successful. We didn’t do that,” said Hundseth. The Guardians (coached by Hundseth) also included Scott Marshall, Morgan Wingate, Kyle Dellezay.
In the semis, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders dumped the Regina Campbell Tartans 88-75 as Daniel Brudehl scored 20, Chris Bodnar 16 and Tim Hollman 15. Kai Williams paced Campbell with 19. Jon Bridge added 15 and Daniel Omoigui 14. Campbell led 41-31 at the half. Getting contributions up and down the roster, the Crusaders overcame a 10-point half-time deficit to pull away in the fourth quarter and knock off Campbell. “Early on, we were almost holding on a little too tight,” Crusaders coach Barry Rawlyk told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “They just had to relax and let the game come.” Adam Vangool nailed a pair of big three-pointers to bring Cross closer after half. At the third-quarter buzzer, Dan Brudehl scored to give Cross its first lead. From then on, the Crusaders rolled.
In the other semi, the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans defeated the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls 65-49 as Jacob Bayda scored 19, Jason Price 17 and Kory Campbell 12. Zee Cilimdzic led Hardy with 18. David Neufeld added 13 and Ryan Beaudry 12. Sheldon opened with a 17-2 run and extended its lead to 35-18 at the half. Sheldon Williams closed out the third frame on a 14-1 run for a 54-31 lead and the Spartans romped. “There’s no doubt it was a great start,” Spartans coach Ray Jacoby told the Moose Jam Times-Herald. “We had some guys shoot the ball incredibly well early in the game when you might think their nerves would get the better of them . . . guys like Jacob Bayda, he hit his first five or six shots, he couldn’t miss. So, having guys like that get off to a start like that was key for us, as well as how well we played defensively.”
In the bronze medal match, the Saskatoon Evan Hardy Souls defeated the Regina Campbell Tartans 84-69 as David Neufeld scored 34 and Ryan Beaudry 20. Jon Bridge led Campbell with 18. J.P. Willner added 10. Evan Hardy led 41-30 at the half. Hardy played one of their best games of the season. “We didn’t want to go home with nothing,” Hardy’s David Neufeld told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. The Tartans also included Kai Williams, Daniel Omoigui, Logan Brooks, Preston O’Brien, Joel Kullman.
In the final, the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Regina Sheldon-Williams Spartans 90-83 as Daniel Brudehl scored 27, Chris Bodnar 21 and Adam Vangool 15. Kolten Solomon paced Sheldon with 31. Jason Price added 18 and Jacob Bayda 10. Holy Cross led 44-37 at the half. Sheldon trailed by as many as 21 but rallied down the stretch to make it a contest, falling just short. “We thought we were the best,” senior forward Dan Brudehl told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “We just had to prove it.” The Crusaders finished (32-2) on the season. “This is something I’ll never forget,” said Cross third-year guard Chris Bodnar. Added Cross coach Barry Rawlyk: “The consensus was that we were one of the favourites to go the distance. From that sense, there’s excitement but also a great deal of relief.” The Crusaders five three-pointers in the opening quarter to take a 31-13 lead. The game could have gotten completely out of hand after Bodnar hit his third trey to put Cross up by 21, but the Spartans woke up. Kolten Solomon, after missing two games with an ankle injury, scored 12 points in the quarter. Jason Price was a load inside. Brudehl, Cory Schlosser and Tim Hollman were on Cross’s bench in foul trouble. By halftime, the Crusaders lead had been whittled down to 44-37. “We thought we had a real good shot at it,” said Sheldon coach Ray Jacoby. After the Spartans pulled within 47-46, their smallest deficit all night, Bodnar took over. A lay-up pushed the lead back to three. Moments later, he hit again. Next possession, he made a sweet dish. His teammates followed suit. Brudehl scored 14 of his 27 points in the frame. Jonny Bast hit back-to-back threes to help keep Cross ahead 73-63 after three quarters. “I had some space so I had to knock them down,” said Bast. With momentum back on their side, the Crusaders extended their lead back to 17. Sheldon pulled within 87-81 with 48 seconds left, but ultimately the Crusaders wouldn’t be denied. “This is one of the happiest moments of my life,” said Brudehl. “Unbelievable,” said Bodnar. “We’re going to miss all of this but it’s a perfect way to finish. You can’t ask for a better way to end a season.”
