In the national round robin tourney, the Vancouver Buzz Bombs thrashed the Halifax Hyacks 85-59 as national team members Wendy Grant and Joanne Sargeant scored 20 and 13 points, respectively. Heather Mileton added 12. The Hyacks were paced by Linda Stubbs 20, Nancy Buzzell 14, Kim Robson 11 and Anthea Bellemare 11.
The defending champion Hamilton Brakettes, formerly the Athenas, sent Halifax to its second straight defeat as national teams members Cathy Williams and Pat Tatham scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, during an 83-49 victory. Halifax was led by Nancy Buzzell’s 19 points.
In the final game to decide the national champion, the Vancouver Buzz Bombs defeated the Hamilton Brakettes 51-44. Hamilton took a 27-22 lead at the half but Vancouver opened the second half with 15-0 run to storm ahead 37-27. Hamilton closed to within three with four minutes to go but Vancouver held on. The Buzz Bombs were paced by guard Joanne Sargeant 18, Wendy Grant 13 and Pauline Gensick 10. Pat Tatham led Hamilton with 14. Kathy Williams added 8, Fiona Skurjat 5, Sue Tupling 5, Anne Hurley 4, Kathy Jennings 4 and Charlotte Goodchild 4. Brakettes coach Earl Begg told the Hamilton Spectator that “we lost it on offence. They outscored us 15-22 in the first nine minutes of the second half. We did everything wrong for nine minutes.”
