Gamble is “the heart and soul of this club,” said Lions coach Sean Christy. “Courtney’s the perfect example of how a player can dominate a game and not necessarily score a lot. She has the ability to set the tone and pace of a game and really take charge.” Gamble said “we knew coming in we’d have to play hard defence, which is exactly what we did. We shut down [the Warriors] and didn’t allow them to get any momentum. Our offence also showed a lot of patience and poise and just seemed to make the right decisions most of the time.” The Lions led 26-16 at the half. Evans noted “this was our best game of the season, a solid 32 minutes. Most games we tend to have a mental lapse, but [yesterday] we stayed focused right from the start. We were definitely the hungrier team, we seemed to want it more and it showed on the court. We like to run the floor,” noted Evans. “We run a lot in practice, we’re in good shape and we believe we can run most teams into the ground. This team loves transition basketball. I thought we did a great job of getting the ball up the floor ahead of [the Warriors].” Christy said his troops did a better job defensively on Whitty in the second half. “We watched her much closer in the fourth quarter.” Brianne Whitty had 16 for Westpark. Lisa Moldowan added 7. This experience should be invaluable for those players coming back next year. Unfortunately, we were in a little over our heads against Chatham. But like I say, this experience bodes well for next year’s team and the nine returning players.” The Lions (coached by Sean Christy and Ron Stenzl) included Missy Stenzl, Laura Roantree, Kelly Yateman, Courtney Gamble, Allison Evans, Jenny Hamilton, Brooke Baker, Beth Roantree, Jenna Roantree, Breanna Irwin, Maren Hamilton, Jessica Munro and Anna Peppard.
